    3. Does anyone know if there are records from Libby Prison? My ancestor, Capt. Martin Scherff, was a prisoner there. Thanks. ________________________________________ Conserve resources. 3. Linda I googled Libby prison records And found this reference: http://www.archives.gov/research/guide-fed-records/groups/249.html Go down to 249.3.2 records relating to individual federal prisoners of war There are some records at Fold3, but not an entire roster of inmates that I can see. 3. A good overview on Libby Prison can be found in William B. Hesseltine's "Civil War Prisons." pp. 60-79. Observations by one Neal Dow, prisoner. Hesseltine has good footnotes to lead to other material. National Archives Record Group 109. There is a section called "Records relating to prisoners, oaths, and paroles": NARA Microfilm Publication M598. These are records of Confederates held in Union prisons. I have used this series twice, and both times I had specific information to find what I was looking for. Records of Union soldiers held in Confederate prisons can be found in National Archives Record Group 249, Records of the Commissary General of Prisons In either case, the only information you will find is a ledger list of soldiers with information about their specific condition. There is no "family information" for prisoners in these records. Most of the "family information" about any member of the military in the Civil War is contained within the soldier's pension records ~ Trevia Trevia Wooster Beverly Houston, Texas 713.864-6862 Coordinator, Angelina College Genealogy Conference http://www.angelina.edu/genealogy/genealogy.html Member APG http://www.apgen.org/ SSA. http://southwestarchivists.org/ TSHA. http://www.tshaonline.org/ Harris County Historical Commission (1995 - ) http://www.historicalcommission.hctx.net/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "LINDA WHITNEY" <LINDA.WHITNEY@omh.ny.gov> To: <roots@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2012 9:09 AM Subject: [ROOTS-L] Libby Prison > Does anyone know if there are records from Libby Prison?
