    1. [ROOTS-L] DeBOURNEY: Traditional Story; Is it true?
    2. John D. Sissom via
    3. If you have ever heard this story, I would like to correspond with you.  I last made this request in 1996. Family tradition says that long ago, a Spanish, or possibly French, Nobleman, Don Leon DeBOURNEY was exiled from the Court of Spain/France for killing a king's courtier in a duel. The story continues, that the Don finally made his way to America where he met and married a Governor's daughter. My great great grandmother, Amanda Isabel PRESSLER, is reportedly a descendant of Don Leon DeBOURNEY, through the TIFFT line. I have not even found a reference to the name DeBOURNEY. Amanda Isabel PRESLER's mother was Knickerbocker Dutch, named TIFFT. I have only heard the name "DeBOURNEY" pronounced, never saw in print. John at Sissom dot org

    3. Tifft is not a Knickerbocker Dutch at all. Originally one of early Rhode Island families since first settlements. Partially Quaker. Alternative spelling is Tefft. Lots of them intermarried with my family. I see there is already full pedigree behind Amanda. No room or space possible for Leon DeBourney. Amanda was born 1813 Oswego, New York and died 1889 in Ohio, husband Jeremiah Taylor. In other words, Amanda is my 4th cousin 6 times removed through her mother's line the Tefft line.
