    3. Barbara You may have already done this, but checking the death certificates for Eddie, Sallie, and Annie may give the mother's name. I think one question would be "how do you know her name was Carter?" Is this a family story? While it's pretty common to know a wife's first name, but not last, or not knowing either, it's pretty unusual to know the family name, and not the given name. Is it possible that "Johnie" was the mother (see 1900 census) and she actually ran away, or was kicked out, rather than dying? He still could have been referred to as "widowed." That was pretty common. In 1900, were there other Carter girls who could be the mother? Could she have been married to a Carter, and the marriage to Carroll was a second marriage? Hope these ideas are helpful. Did locate the 1910 census for Uriah | Carroll [listed as Euli], found as the widowed brother-in-law of Cooper Gunnells, | age 52 (wife Sallie is Uriah's sister). The three named children are living there as | well, in Buford Bridge, Bamberg County, SC. | | Also found the death record for Charlie Carroll, born 17Sep1894, whose parents | are listed as Uriah Carroll and Mary Smoak. The surname of Uriah's second wife | is Carter, whom he married after 1900. She bore the 3 children (Eddie, Sallie and | Annie), then passed away prior to 1910. | | -----Original Message----- | From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] | On Behalf Of Kith-n-Kin | Sent: Wednesday, April 30, 2014 6:23 PM | To: 'Barbara Beagles'; [email protected] | Subject: Re: [ROOTS-L] My grandmother's first name unknown maiden name | CARTER | | Barbara | Some thoughts. | The 1900 census of Fish Pond, Bamberg County, has | 224/227 | Uriah Carry, head, b June 1870, 20, married ten years, he and parents b SC, farm | laborer Mary, wife, b Feby 1878, 22, m/10 yrs, two children, two living.
