The San Francisco Colma Cemetery Index has: Leith, John B, 8 Jan 1985, Section H, Row 79, Grave 31, Holy Cross. http://www.sfgenealogy.com/php/cemetery/cemeterysearch.php It doesn't indicate whether that is a burial date, or a death date. However, of interest is that the grave also includes Anne A Leith, dated 30 Aug 1950. Perhaps that helps? The Cal Death Index has her as Anne Agnes Leith, b 20 May 1888 in "other country" d 26 Aug 1950. No parents' names listed. John does not appear on the index, with those dates. However, there is a listing for John Baptist Leith, b 13 Dec 1881, California, d 30 Oct 1959, San Francisco, Mother's maiden name Angonnet. This JBL (jr), according to his WWI Draft Registration, was born 13 Dec 1881, living in Oakland, California in 1918, a packer for Emporium Co., in San Francisco. John Baptist Leith (senior) was born 24 July 1853 in Valparizo, Chile, died 17 Apr 1938. He was a retired jeweler. Buried at Woodlawn. (no wonder you're confused here!!!) In 1930, there were three John B Leiths living in San Francisco. The first, born in Chile, age 76, Junior, 49, divorced, born in California, (mother and father both born Chile), and grandson, 16, b California of Californian parents. The 1920 census provides the information that John, senior's wife was Carlotta. Carlotta was born in California, father born in France, mother born in Chile. Ah, the 1900 gives us the skinny. John B, Jr, was born Dec 1881. Father born Jul 1851. He and Charlotta (b Nov 1866) have been married 14 years. There is also a Funeral Home Record for Anita Viola Taylor, b 9 Apr 1891, d 8 Jul 1980, San Francisco, father John Baptist Leith, mother Charlotte Angonnet. Entombment: Cypress Lawn, Colma. (Most San Francisco deaths are/were buried in Colma, as SF ran out of cemetery space very early and even the graves were moved.) The above was all from Ancestry and FindAGrave. From GenealogyBank, we further find that the San Francisco Bulletin, dated 14 Dec 1881, lists "Leith -- In this city, December 13, to the wife of John B. Leith, a son." 2 Sep 1937 the SF Chronicle has, under marriages: "Leith-Hamilton -- John B Leith Jr., 21, 1139 Pierce st., and Ann Agnes Hamilton, 18, 856 Stanyan st." That may not help much, but it does tell you who the John B Leith in the grave was married to. Hope this helps. Searching the California Death Index for 1940 and after, there is not any John Leith with a date resembling that at all, that I could see. It might be a good idea to also check the pre 1940 California death index. I think this might be likely to be an indexing error, and that the resolution may have to come by writing or calling the cemetery office. I had an instance where a cemetery website had a totally wrong date of death for someone on their website. I had the obituary, called and discussed it with them (this was on the east coast, not california) and when they checked their records, they discovered that there was a data input error, and they corrected their website. People do their best with transcriptions, but mistakes do happen, even when someone proofreads the work.
Good advice. Sometimes it isn't an error but the reflection of a reburial, I have a lot in my family tree (my family seemed to rebury every time someones status improved and I presume the money did too <G> There are so many possibilities to keep in mind <G> Eliz Not Today and Not without a Fight (Anon) For all that has been, thanks. For all that will be, yes.
