Autosomal test with AncestryDNA is the place to start for a variety of reasons: 1) their database contains more than 2 million others who have tested so they have by far the largest database for finding matches. 2) more people there have trees online attached to their DNA results making it easier for you to connect with your cousins and figure out how you are related. The great benefit of this is it proves your paper tree has no family secrets lurking in it you didn't expect to find or it shakes out any skeletons in the closet. Upload the raw DNA results to GEDMatch which is free and connect with people who tested with other companies and avail yourself to their superior tools for comparison.
