I'm assuming you mean windows instead of wintel. If these folks are truly *NOT* interested in genealogy, overload of information is what you don't want to do. I can already see their eyes glass over when you export a full gedcom to HTML and present that to them. Exporting information that only pertains to their own family might get and keep their attention, smaller the better. As to programs, I'm a grumpy old fart and I don't think they'd like to install anything on my linux install, don't use windows. And what about chrombooks? No genealogy program exists for a chromebook, but they do have a PDF reader. And if they are running a mac, it's not like you can throw a copy of gramps portable on a flash drive and mac being able to run it. If it's a mac, only mac stuff will run, if it's windows only windows programs will run, and linux the same, if it's a chromebook, NOTHING runs on them, and without internet access you have a nice brick/doorstop.. I thought about doing an export as HTML, thought better of it as it's easy for them to get lost in it, and then interest wains and your back to the glassy eyed stare. That's why I suggested PDFS, You can always throw more on a flash drive with more info, but like II said, smaller is better for the genealogical impaired. You are quite right, Jan. It’s very easy to overload even relatives you might think would want to know. But the two or three genealogy shows on TV have figured out it must come across like a story to hold the interest of the masses. There’s an Ancestry TV ad with a lady who “couldn’t wait to see her pie chart.” I’m another non-Windoze old fart but I did switch to Mac when my SCO Xenix no longer worked. No one seems to want to know all you can do with just the OS on a *nix system. We don’t need no stinking apps.
