You should take an autosomal DNA (atDNA) test with Family Tree DNA (Family Finder) or Ancestry.  If you tested at Ancestry you could transfer your kit to Family Tree DNA for an additional $39 and have your kit at both companies.  The test is $99 with both companies.  So for $138 you can have your kit at both and reap the benefits of making matches in both databases.  Your children should do the same to get matches through their father and one of your sons could take a Y-DNA test (Family Tree DNA) and potentially match other males through the exclusively male-descended line in his tree (the top line of the pedigree chart).
