    3. I have had good luck finding matches to ancestors with the Ancestry DNA autosomal test. Of course the more generations back you have traced on paper, the more likely you will match. Most of my direct ancestor matches are from 3rd to 7th great grandparents. Because Ancestry has a larger database and makes better use of gedcoms in making matches, if you can only do one company, that is likely the best choice. Our family has 6 kits there. Since each kit may only pick up about 1/3 of matches, having additional family members means you will likely find more matches since each sibling does not inherit exactly the same DNA. Personally I have been able to determine that most of my paper trails are indeed correct and I found about 6 generations of French Canadian ancestors that I had made no progress on in 15 or 20 years. I also did the Family Finder Test from FTDNA and put my own results and those of a desceased relative on gedmatch where I hope to make some additional contacts. Gedmach is free to use.
