    1. [ROOTS-L] Solving an Ancestry DNA line using Rootsmagic7 software

    3. I am a long time researcher. However, I just received my first Ancestry DNA report, and am now trying to integrate this new technology with my old way of doing things. New technology requires some new strategies. For example I received one Ancestry DNA report indicating that I had a strong match with an individual I had never heard of who was not in Ancestry database online nor my larger database on WorldConnect, and I had not a clue where to start making the connection. I then thought of the relatively new feature built into the popular Rootsmagic software with versions 6 and 7 that lets users access the FamilySearch database from with the Rootsmagic program. Working with the pedigree screen & then the family view where I make my entries in RM7, I was able to go back generation by generation using the hints provided by clicking on the little "squigglies" at the end of the line in Family view with the name for each person. I was able to go back generation by generation for 6 generations until I found two matches with my direct line. It is amazing how much information one can find since the hints can include MyHeritage, Find A Grave, Births & christenings from various states as well as the huge Family Search database. One can also combine this approach with some "googling" of individual couples names. And as I recall, I read Rootsmagic will let users access other large databases in the future. For those of you searching for a very good and also easy to use genealogy program, I highly recommend Rootsmagic. Margaret Scheffler
