    3. Thanks to all who responded. My wife has always claimed Cherokee blood thru her mother. Guess I'll go thru Ancestry since that seems to be the favorite. . Rick Fogle

    3. I would actually like to see responses on this. I have Ancestry DNA. Actually you could search the archives, but there might be new opinions. Lori -------------- I know this has been addressed numerous times, but please humor me. I want to get my wife a DNA profile for her birthday. I have seen a lot of ads for this service but need your expert opinion (off list so as not to clog the system with something old ). Which site(s) are reputable?

    3. I guess you might want to make clear how you are going to use the testing. If you are going to use the autosomal test to help prove or disprove your paper trail, I would use the Ancestry DNA test. Our family has tested with six people, and I really enjoy getting out the pedigree charts and marking where we match with other people. They have a very large database of people to match with. Our family's tests have proved that we are on the right track with a couple problematic ancestral lines. And I have solved a couple other family lines that I would not have solved otherwise. That being said I have recently ordered the Family Finder test from FTDNA (also an autosomal test). Since we had the Y-DNA test for a male ancestor there from 10 years back, I am hoping that we might make some different comparisons. My test has not come back, so I cannot weigh in on whether this is helpful or not. I do not believe from what the representatives told me that the paper trail comparison works the same way. Perhaps someone will weigh in on this. If you just want the ethnicity profile and not compare to databases with paper trails, it probably does not matter. There are companies like 23 & me that include medical information in their results, but I understand that one can take their raw data from Ancestry and share it with some free sites which will interpret the medical issues. You might want to google DNA issues and read up on some of the myriad of postings. 3. Take your pick FTDNA.com has mtDNA and FamilyFinder (essentially autosomal) 23andMe.com has autosomal with health report Ancestry.com/DNA has autosomal (sorry no mtDNA or YDna) Read their sites and decide. 3. Rick For you wife, the available tests are mtDNA, which follows the female line (mother, mother's mother, mother's mother's mother...), and autosomal, which is for everyone. Lots of companies do autosomal, not a lot do mtDNA. I would choose FamilyTreeDNA for that reason. Sometimes you can get a good deal when putting them together. 1. [ROOTS-L] Civil War Units File CWUNITS Call for Listings
    2. Carol Botteron via
    3. Have you researched a U.S. Civil War unit or group? Are you willing and able to help others research that unit? The next version of the U.S. Civil War Units File (CWUNITS) will be available in late June. I will post an announcement then. In the meantime I invite listings through Tuesday, June 21. Also welcome are reports of non-working addresses in other people's listings, updates to your own listings, etc. Special note for those researching CSA Virginia & North Carolina units: Due to the passing of Jeff Weaver, we have had to remove his many listings. If you do research in this area (maybe you have one of his books) please read the FAQ and consider volunteering as a contact. If you write to me, please do *NOT* include this message in your reply. My time and disk space are limited. Also please do *NOT* include attached files. Thanks! The CWUNITS file is now at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~acwunits/ The purpose of the CWUNITS file is to let people list units, groups, battles, etc. that they have information on (from pension records, books, etc.) and are willing to help other people research. Typically the contact person had an ancestor who was in the unit, but re-enactors, history buffs, et al. are welcome. (This is *NOT* a list of re-enactment units.) People who are interested in a unit can send the contact person email and share information. If you have questions please read the FAQ first. If it doesn't answer your questions, feel free to ask me. If you would like to volunteer to be a contact, please send me your email from the address where you'd like to be listed. If you are volunteering for more than one unit, it's OK to put them all in the same message. Please list your entries in this format (sample addresses are fake): Illinois (USA) 4th Illinois Cavalry, Co. F 1861-4 Abe.Lincoln@fake.edu (Abe Lincoln) http://www.fakesample.com/4thil 18th Reg. Ill. Infantry 1862-5 jd@fakesample.com (John Doe) (Somebody's Volunteers) Instructions -- include the following: Country (USA or CSA) and state. Start each entry with the number of the regiment or whatever. Years (if applicable, but not necessary). Your email address on each line. Your real name. If you have a web page for the unit, include the URL (but we need your email address and name too). Also please include a statement like "I volunteer to be a contact for this unit." This is so we can be sure that everyone we list understands what the file is for. This is a big project, and if you send listings in the wrong format we reserve the right to send them back for you to fix. If there's anything in your listings that is not obvious, tell me! If we can't get your listings complete and clear by the time I have to send the file to the uploaders, your listings cannot be included. If you already have listings in the file, there's no need to send them again, but please check them. If your address has changed, please tell me and send updated listings. CWUNITS is five files (plus the FAQ) as follows: Part Contents 1 USA national & states A-I 2 USA states K-N 3 USA states O-W 4 CSA national & states A-M 5 CSA states N-V Q FAQ (frequently asked questions and answers) Parts 1-5 include the intro as well as the listings. Within a state the units are organized by number (1st Infantry, etc.). The file is available at its new home: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~acwunits/ Carol Botteron (ancestors on both sides) botteron@alum.mit.edu

    3. 1100 is old model. Family History Library is using model 3000 now for public use, available on every floor except Main Floor and 3rd floor (that is because there are no microfilms on those floors). It doesn't come with a computer. You can get different computer set up. Scanpro come with software program to install in your choice of computer (PC). http://www.e-imagedata.com/ David Samuelsen On 5/31/2016 9:21 AM, jmundy via wrote: > > > Has anyone used a Scanpro 1100 or 3000 microfilm scanner? > > > > If so, what did you think? > > > > Our library is considering buying a new microfilm scanner. 2. Kathy Walsh via
    3. Hi, I have been trying to obtain a CD of the Tuten family that was offered on roots web in 2007. One email I obtained was someone who is retired. Catherine Tuten, 1831 - 1903, Hampton County, SC, who married Nathaniel Ellis is my 2nd great-grandmother. My Dad, J Ellis, never went back to SC after WWll. My direct line is on the CD. I sent an email to everyone who asked for a copy and they all bounced. Since this was freely distributed, I am hopeful there is someone who has a copy. Will gladly pay all fees necessary to obtain this CD. Thank you, Kathy Ellis Kathy Walsh

    3. It isn't as easy in the small window but counting from the RIGHT it is the third column, toward the bottom. I transcribed it all there isn't a big headline or big article just enough to remind us there was a big epidemic. My 2Xggfather was one who disappeared and if the Cleveland Roundtable hadn't done all the city owned cemeteries and if Cleveland didn't put online all their deeds I would still be wondering but i know now he died of cholera in 1854. 2. dianna charles via
    3. Hi Everyone I was wondering can anyone tell me please if there are any records on Fold3 for the French-Indian war at all. I’m looking for any mention of Benjamin FULLOM/UM (Foolam) many variant spellings who served in the French-Indian War while he was living in Virginia (from Frederick County?). This was in 1758, he then later lived in Washington County PA from at least 1783 (Tax list). No death, burial or probate records have been found for him in Pennsylvania as yet. He and family were living in Racoon/Robinson Twp in Washington County. Any help finding more details on Benjamin would be most appreciated. Kindest regards Dianna

    3. Hi, I am trying to find anything that will show that the man in my subject line ( Clare Johnson Swinborn) existed.  So far (the last twenty five years) I have found nothing.  I do know his state of birth (PA) and his approx date of birth (1906 or 1907).  That is all.  It's like every trace of his life has vanished.  I don't know his parents' names, any siblings, or when he died.  I have struck out with SSA records, census, military, public trees.  My dream is that there is someone out there who has some sort of relationship to him.  I don't know if he was a good man or a louse, but I would like to think he left something of himself behind somewhere.  Thanks.  John in TN.

I'm looking for information on Prospect School - located at 6th Street and Prospect - in Hermosa Beach, CA. I attended the school in the mid-40's and think there were four grades in the two room School House - - - I"ve looked for this information for about 20 years - and the only thing I can find is it's haunted - and local people hear the kids playing - "Smile" They've also built a small fort - on the lower playground - - - I've contacted the Hermosa Beach Historical Society - three times - however they didn't respond. I even sent a self addressed stamped envelope - with no response - which is unusual but it does happen - - - If you have any information - you would like to share - please feel free to use my email at: beachbumn55@aol.com Thanks in advance - - - Gerry Lang Hoffman Estates, IL

    3. I have been going through old photos and scaning them into my computer.  Some of these photos have resided in a box for over 100 years.  Of course most of them are unidentified.  There is one of a small boy about 6 years old that I believe may be Nathan Franklin Robbins, only child of Mary Catherine "Polly" Dyson (1841-1897) and James W. Robbins (1830-1864).  He was the son of Polly's first husband and is not in my line as I am researching those of her second marriage to Calvin Owens.  Nathan Franklin Robbins married Georgia Ann Dillard.  If there is anyone who is identifying with this Robbins line, I would be happy to send you this photo.
