Raymond G Spencer born 1890 New Hartford, NY, lived in Herkimer, NY when he died 9 September 1950 in New Hartford. Seeking place of burial. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
She has years of research but unable to travel now. She is not online now. She has researched her family back to New York. All lines are Catholic, and all indications are Southern Ireland. I wasn't sure whether the researcher would best be hired from NY area or Ireland. I told her I would do my best to help her find someone she could trust. I would appreciate any suggestions. Sydney Cardner bcardner@tampabay.rr.com Just a note: rejoining this list after almost 10 yrs. I still recognize a few names. I think that's amazing. I haven't researched my lines in ages nor have I posted except at Ancestry for a while. I still get phone calls from surprising places from relatives who have finally connected. I still get emails requesting more info on a line I posted about at Genforum in the early 2000s. For me genealogy has been continuing journey, even when I stop and rest.
Hello again Listers and thank you for your reply Margaret and also your suggestions. I have actually tried Find My Past. I will give GENUKI another search. I have not tried the link you have to Parish Clerks but will do, thank you for that. I do use the Hints on Ancestry a lot. Thank you again. As much as I like the Ancestry DNA process overall, the message sending procedure does not work very well if people do not consistently log on to Ancestry and look at their messaging system. Also, it is not real easy to use. If I find someone willing to correspond at their request or mine, I ask them to correspond by regular email. Frequently I can help someone without spending much time by sending them a pedigree chart of someone in my database, and then pointing them to my large shared database on WorldConnect which has all my notes and sources. I simply do not have the time to type out long messages with information I have already posted online, but I am almost always willing to help if I am able. I am bewildered when I write to the people with locked databases that have actual "shared ancestor results". You would think it would not be difficult to look at those and simply respond with the name of the individual or couple involved. I also wonder why many lock their databases in the first place. They are hurting themselves from people like me who often write to offer people information they don't have posted online or provide correct information if their data is incorrect. As for the distant cousins -- often there is nothing in the person's online database that gives someone a clue as to how the two of you might connect. It takes a lot of time to try to track most of these down. However, I had an interesting thing happen. I kept finding all these French Canadian names posted in the databases of others with no apparent matches. Eventually I discovered several generations of my Barcume/Berthiaume direct line ancestors. When one is dealing with more than one language, it is easy to miss information that is actually useful. Anther issue is that with a relatively large database, one may have thousands of distant cousins. I have asked Ancestry for some additional filters for their results, that might help us navigate some of these distant cousins. Initially, a filter by the database name would be helpful to me. I may have the database name from someone, with no way to actually find their results. For most of the results of our family's kits, I have only gone through the first 15 pages or so of perhaps an excess of 250 pages or more. At about 50 results, per page it is so time consuming to go through them one by one. A final comment -- some people have download much of the content of their databases from a variety of online sources. They may know little if anything about many people in the trees they have posted. We all need to find a way to connect with serious researches with some level of expertise. Like Lori, a 10% response rate is not uncommon. But I share the frustration when I think someone might actually have the clue I cannot find myself. Lori - I am an avid genealogy fan, have a large tree, and have taken all three DNA tests. However I have found the results tedious to work with and have done little with them. I have had good luck finding matches to ancestors with the Ancestry DNA autosomal test. Of course the more generations back you have traced on paper, the more likely you will match. Most of my direct ancestor matches are from 3rd to 7th great grandparents. Because Ancestry has a larger database and makes better use of gedcoms in making matches, if you can only do one company, that is likely the best choice. Our family has 6 kits there. Since each kit may only pick up about 1/3 of matches, having additional family members means you will likely find more matches since each sibling does not inherit exactly the same DNA. Personally I have been able to determine that most of my paper trails are indeed correct and I found about 6 generations of French Canadian ancestors that I had made no progress on in 15 or 20 years. I also did the Family Finder Test from FTDNA and put my own results and those of a desceased relative on gedmatch where I hope to make some additional contacts. Gedmach is free to use. Margaret Scheffler
I've had the full sequence mtDNA test done at FTDNA and while it is "interesting" in learning about the ancient origin of your straight maternal line (mother's mother's mother's side on back---very bottom line of your pedigree) it is NOT at all helpful in finding cousins, connecting to recent generations, or adding to your tree. Only autosomal DNA testing can do that. Joan Young jyoung6180@aol.com -----Original Message----- From: Kith-n-Kin via <roots@rootsweb.com> To: 'Suzie Ditmars' <suziejazzaroo@gmail.com> Cc: roots <roots@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thu, Jul 28, 2016 7:28 pm Subject: Re: [ROOTS-L] DNA Suzie The tests appropriate (right now) are the mtDNA (mitochondrial dna) test, which is like the yDNA test for males. It follows the sex-line backwards in time. So, it is helpful in following your maternal line back. The fact that Americans rarely include the mother's name in naming patterns, makes this difficult, but sometimes when you get back to an unnamed female, you may find others who match that will give that female a name. These two tests work because in both cases, they deal with dna that is passed "whole" and not mixed with the other parent. Both men and women have the same mtDNA, only men have the yDNA. If you have a male cousin/uncle from your "surname line" of interest, you might want to see if that person is willing. I've paid for three kits for men to do males lines of mine. In one case, with only ONE hit, we (the other testor) were able to connect a line in Virginia back to the 1600s. Thanks to some really good records work that had been done, I was able to see where my "guy" fit in to their "guy." The other test that people speak of is the autosomal DNA test (FamilyFinder on FamilyTreeDNA). This test uses other parts of the chromosome makeup that are mixed and matched when conception takes place...half from Mom, half from Dad. IF enough people who are related do the test, the lab is able to isolate common elements and give a good clue about relationship. This is being upgraded all the time. IF you choose to do this (I'd do both, if I were you), you want your 3 sons, 1 daughter, and every living relative you have to take the test. Go for the oldest living relative you can find. I know that the ads make this seem sooooo very easy, but from personal experience I can tell you that not everyone goes from liederhosen to kilts after these tests. They only work as "hints" for finding records (yes, work), and if a "small" family, or one uninterested, there won't be many hits. The other problem is what is called "endogamy" where the number of close cousin marriages imply much closer connection than exists. Yes, the biological connection is close, the "family" connection, maybe not. I manage one kit from an Ashkinazi Jew relative, whose ancestors in the US go back before 1850, who shows "immediate" family members from Eastern Europe. And, I get probably six hits a week, and letters from folks asking "how are we related." So, my advice? Find a way to learn about this while you are awaiting the processing of the kit. A recommendation is a blog by Roberta Estes at https://dna-explained.com/. Hope this helps. I have 139 pages of DNA matches (50 matches per page) many of whom I correspond and research with on a regular basis. A few I've been able to fill in their trees for them and make corrections and additions to show them where we connect. A few more have helped me fill in gaps in my tree. Some don't respond and of those some I know where we connect from tree info or shared matches and leave notes about our connection on the match. Of course there are also a bunch I don't know where we match, who do not respond and/or don't have public trees. But on the whole I've been able to put a check mark of PROVEN/VERIFIED on each branch of my tree. Autosomal test with AncestryDNA is the place to start for a variety of reasons: 1) their database contains more than 2 million others who have tested so they have by far the largest database for finding matches. 2) more people there have trees online attached to their DNA results making it easier for you to connect with your cousins and figure out how you are related. The great benefit of this is it proves your paper tree has no family secrets lurking in it you didn't expect to find or it shakes out any skeletons in the closet. Upload the raw DNA results to GEDMatch which is free and connect with people who tested with other companies and avail yourself to their superior tools for comparison. Suzie The tests appropriate (right now) are the mtDNA (mitochondrial dna) test, which is like the yDNA test for males. You should take an autosomal DNA (atDNA) test with Family Tree DNA (Family Finder) or Ancestry. If you tested at Ancestry you could transfer your kit to Family Tree DNA for an additional $39 and have your kit at both companies. The test is $99 with both companies. So for $138 you can have your kit at both and reap the benefits of making matches in both databases. Your children should do the same to get matches through their father and one of your sons could take a Y-DNA test (Family Tree DNA) and potentially match other males through the exclusively male-descended line in his tree (the top line of the pedigree chart). Considering a DNA test and would like suggestions for the BEST. I am female with no siblings- need the test for women. Also have 3 sons and 1 daughter. What would the best be for them? Suzie Ditmars
Hi group. I've notice for the past three days I have not been able to load photo's in Ancestry.com This is the message I am getting when I go to load: "We're sorry, this gallery is temporarily unavailable. You can try reloading the page in your browser, or come back later." Any ideas on what's going on? I do have Ad Block but it is paused for that site. Thank you, Sandra
Your browser might be bring up the cache? I have been able to load a lot of pics to Ancestry the last couple of days so it seems likely it is your browser.
