    1. [ROOTS-L] don't believe everything...
    2. for as far back as my earliest days of research I was told the immigration records for the 1800's to Baltimore "had burned in a fire in the 1940's" and not to expect to find the records. on a fluke today I decided to see if Ancestry had scanned the index that had been made of the immigration lists before the fire. I never got to that, because when I clicked on what I thought was the index, instead I got the original manifest! the family only has initials instead of full given names, but I know it well as it's a well documented one, and every initial and age is a perfect match, plus this family kept the arrival date as part of the family story, so I also had the date to work with. so if you have ancestors who came into Baltimore and you believe the story put out that the records burned, check Ancestry, you may be pleasantly surprised! I have had no luck in death/cemetery,census records so far. I am looking for Albert A. Mead from Alameda, Oakland, Calif. He was a painter, had three children by 1906. Wife was Lizzie, nickname, and Mary E.. Does any one have a data base for Alameda? They have gone off-line with their indexes. Thanks, Mike mharmer@carolina.rr.com

    1. [ROOTS-L] Nebraska death index
    2. I am looking for a death index in Nebraska, that isn't a scam. They say they are free, but than you have to give a lot of info, and a credit card number. I looked through several web sites, even one that is always referred to as the State Genealogy, and it's just one disappointment after another. I went through several that looked legitimate and kept putting in what I was looking for, with no good answers. It is so frustrating to waste a couple of hours, looking for a real genealogy site you can trust. Especially as I am up there in years and can't travel as I once could, I get discouraged. I only have a little time left to get what I must for my family tree, don't like to waste it on sites that are greedy and only looking for the all might buck !!!! Shirley Sullivan

    3. There is NO statewide death index online. Death records are kept at Nebraska State Vital Records and searches must be paid in advance whether they find a record or not. http://dhhs.ne.gov/publichealth/Pages/vitalrecords.aspx You can also try the Nebraska State Historical Society for advice: http://www.nebraskahistory.org/lib-arch/services/index.shtml http://www.nebraskahistory.org/lib-arch/services/index.htm For questions or comments on the website itself, email nshs.web@nebraska.gov ------------------------------ On Wed, Mar 28, 2012 at 1:00 PM, <Sullyshirl73@aol.com> wrote: > I am looking for a death index in Nebraska, that isn't a scam. Any information about her would be greatly appreciated-example her maiden name or her husband's name or why she was living with the Grimes family. He married Sarah Walker Jones in Sumter, Alabama 22 MAY 1832. I think the O' was dropped when he crossed the pond. He died in Hillsboro, Union County, Arkansas 13 JAN 1851. If I find him in Ireland I'll know if he had brothers and sisters. I subscribe to the international version of Ancestry.com but so far I haven't turned up a clue. 3. You hit it bang on <<"Enter X after name of person furnishing information." (The x has a circle around it.) For the first time, we'll get to see who gave the information to the census enumerator. And if that person was not a member of the household, the enumerator was instructed: "If you find it necessary to obtain the information from a person who is not a member of the household, write the name of this person in the left-hand margin, opposite the entries for the household, thus: 'Information from John Brown, neighbor.'" Very cool.>> And the other points as well!! 3. Nivard, and others... It is definitely a challenge to say what the site does that is different without being overly technical. Of course, I didn't intend to describe it as a search engine per see. First it is a place to share genealogy information. In simple terms the site uses standard vocabularies that relate to genealogy in the same way that GEDCOM was developed as a way to share genealogy information. New features and new application can be developed using these standards - not just standard vocabularies but standardized ways for storing information. It is an "Open" database, as it were. Every statement of knowledge, is communicated in a standard format of subject predicate object, just like one does in English or any language. There is a faq page that I am building and which will contain more information. It is here: http://my-family-lineage.com/wiki/FAQ Perhaps people could suggest other questions? 3. Pat, I did just run across one email on Gen-Newbie but it didn't mention anything about anyone having serious problems with their computers. Right now the site is redirecting me elsewhere. I tried to make some money to cover costs. So, I did try to find ways to raise funds. I had no idea that the way I was trying to raise funds, using affiliate programs and/or pay-per-click programs, I did try clicksor, would cause these problems. It is very, very discouraging to discover this. My intentions are very good and I have invested a great deal of money into developing an application that I had hoped would catch on and be great. It seemed like I also got other feedback on Gen-Newbie at an earlier time that was back in 2011 when the project was newer and I started describing the Semantic web and what I was going to do... people were very interested and wanted to learn more. Then in 2012, I hired someone who helped me with a script to import GEDCOM files. He also helped me get rid of spam and spammers. I must have put over $1000 into this work. Plus there is the cost of web hosting... I am so very discouraged now. I don't know what to do. I was so excited by this work and the new technology... but if the site is already seen in such a bad light, in such a negative way, what can be done? I will look into this with the people that are helping me... but I don't know how to present this again in a very positive way... and for people to want to discover what could be great about this. I am assuming that one there might be a virus on the server and that needs to be investigated and two I will definitely look into and remove certain types of advertising or affiliate programs that might be doing these kinds of things that mess up sites. Admittedly some of these features may not be immediately apparent, that is in terms of what makes the application different than others (In technical terms the application uses Semantic Web technologies but one doesn't need to know what that means to benefit from the new features).
