I think GB automagically adds "Bill" and "Billy" to "William" but I'm not so sure you're correct about the two search names in close proximity to each other. But of course "close" is a relative term. The two names could fall within the same newspaper where I'm hoping for just a space between them. I prefer searches where you can check off "exact match" but then I have other fish to fry than reading meaningless old newspaper articles. Tomorrow I'll go visit Clayton Library and see what turns up on William. The library is closed Monday or I would have spent the afternoon there. I love Genealogybank. I have an unfortunate last name Day--(guess how many times that appears in daily papers!) so I will put the name on one line in quotes to narrow it down. I also use the filters--dates, words you don't want associated with your word--for example one of my ggrandpa's last names was also the name of a famous ballplayer so I subtract out that first name. I do remember using newspaperarchives on Godfrey Library and not liking it as much. Genealogybank has a somewhat steep learning curve but if you play around with it, you will get great results. Kris

Well, this is what the "help" part of GB says: " When two or more words are entered without surrounding quotation marks, only articles containing all of the terms will be returned. They may appear in any order and anywhere in the document. To search for exact phrases, put quotation marks around the phrase (e.g. "Acme Corporation"). NOTE: Searching exact phrases in the First Name or Last Name field is not recommended for two reasons: (1) the order in which last and first names appear often differ (e.g. "Smith, William" vs. "William Smith"), and (2) sometimes a middle initial will be included (e.g. "William E. Smith" vs. "William Smith")" I have not had the experience of the program automagically using nicknames/akas, so I can't speak to that. (Oh, here it is: "When entering first names, keep in mind that variations that might be used - e.g. William, Bill, Will, etc.. Example: (William OR Bill)." So, you can put in all the variations you can think of, using the Boolean operators. On proximity, we have: Proximity Operators Proximity operators allow you to specify just how close two words must occur in a story to be included in your results. See the examples below. military NEAR/5 service - contains military and service within five words, in any order. And, it has wildcards, as well as Boolean operators. So, you might try some of those: http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/information/help/advanced_techniques.html# proximity_operators Glad this came up. Long time since I looked at the "help" screen, so I forgot some of the things it can do. I have had a subscription to genealogybank for over two years and I think it's great. Most of their obits date from 1990 or later but that's still a lot of obits and I have been able to track many of my lines down to the present using their collection. They also have an historical newspapers archive and I've found a few things on there also. I have access to Newspaper Archives through the Godfrey Library site. For the past few months, I've been having a problem viewing articles. I click on the title link and another Tab opens to the Newspaper Archives logo, name & date of the article but... no article. I also right-clicked on the link then clicked "Save Link As" but all that comes up is file name "Viewer.aspx" which won't open to anything. I use Firefox but I've also tried Chrome and Internet Explorer with the same results. I wrote to Newspaper Archive but never heard back. Does anyone know how I can view the articles? Thanks, dee

Carl, I think it depends on what places your ancestors lived. If you go to GenealogyBank's site, you can look at the newspapers (and dates) they have per State. I've been a member of GB for years. My ancestors came from the WV. Unfortunately, from the years 1900 - 1999 there are no WV newspapers in GB with the exception of literally one day (9 June 1904) for one paper. I'm still hoping, though! Until then, I've been looking for family in the surrounding states. Hi all: I have had wonderful results with GenealogyBank, mainly with Seattle TIMES from abt. 1900 on up; and also with misc. papers from large eastern sources. I am waiting for the day when they get to the smaller village papers, i.e. Dunlap, Iowa, would be a gold mine for me. I have never used NewspaperArchives. I look forward to exploring that source. Hi all: Well, I took my own advice and googled for an answer. I found " m.b.c.m" indicates a British medical degree. So my Robert was a doctor, not a soldier as I had thought. Still do not know why he died so young. Elizabeth Goodfellow Engle I asked: In Abernethy, Perthshire, on a tombstone/monument of one of my Scottish families is the following inscription: "Robert Edie, m.b.c.m., who died 16th April 1894, aged 29." Has anyone any idea what the initials "m.b.c.m." stand for?

Words of caution....if you have any problems with your old file it does not transfer over until you have corrected the errors. And if you do not know what the errors are or where they are located, then it is extremely difficult. I have answered this before and had kept using my old FTM 2006 on my Windows 7 computer with no problems. Then suddenly I did have a problem and went and bought the 2012 FTM, only to find that I could not transfer my file. Spent over 3 hours on the phone with tech support and they had no clue or way of resolving my problem. She did explain how to export individuals one at a time or a group, which is what I am now doing. I now am transferring small groups of individuals at a time to locate where there are errors (I have over 3,000 individuals). I select 10-30 people and transfer to the FTM 2012. If it fails then I start deleting and adding back individuals from the transfer list until it is successful and by doing this I locate what individual I have a problem with. These people will have to be added separately into FTM 2012 with all the info that I have collected. I have spent over 40 hours attempting to transfer and I still have a long way to go to have a complete file, and then I am not sure if it really is complete. Also, you must compact your file before doing the transfer. If you are unable to compact your file it is due to errors and it will not transfer. I also asked if there was a file limit and tech support did not know the answer. Unless I am searching a very unusual name I search by individual databases. But take a look at your results page, they have put in many limiters, I still don't think it is as good as the pilot search site but you can add parents and spouses name, years of events and so on.
