    3. I think you should try the Dutchess Co., Historical society they might have city directories but so too might a library in town or near by. Getting death certificates out of NYS can be pricey and slow. Google give no RC church in Pine Plains but many near by. Also go to findagrave and enter a search for Kelly and Dutchess co and it gives a number of RC cemeteries that you could call and ask if they have a burial for your people. Also check out the county site http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nydutche/ But I do think the phone is your best friend right now <G> Eliz St Christophers Church 7411 South Broadway, Red Hook, NY 11 mi W (845) 758-3732 ‎ · stchrisredhook.org St Mary Catholic Church 76 Sharon Road, Lakeville, CT 11 mi E (860) 435-2659 ‎ · stmarylakeville.org Good Shepherd Church 3 Mulberry Street, Rhinebeck, NY 13 mi W (845) 876-4583 ‎ · goodshepherd12572.com 2 reviews "Wonderful parish community filled with God's love!" - Saint Joseph Catholic Church 15 North Avenue, Millbrook, NY 14 mi S (845) 677-3422 ‎ · church.stjosephmillbrook.org Holy Cross Monastery Esopus, New York 20 mi SW (845) 384-6660 ‎ · holycrossmonastery.com Category: Catholic Church book and gift shop · monastic community · group retreats · episcopal church · mid-hudson valley St Bridget's Church 7 River Rd, Sharon, CT 18 mi SE (860) 672-6515 ‎ · stbridgetschurch.org St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church 93 Wurts Street, Kingston, NY 18 mi W (845) 331-0436 ‎ · stpeterskingston.org On Wed, Apr 4, 2012 at 11:41 AM, <eburns7@rochester.rr.com> wrote: >> Hello all, >> This is my first attempt at using the mailing list.  Please redirect me if I am not following proper protocols or procedures. > >> I am searching for some information on Pine Plains, NY. 1. [ROOTS-L] Help finding obit Wm. H. Meriwether 1861
    2. Sharon Pike
    3. I need help finding an obituary, if one exists. William Hunter Meriwether was a wealthy man who lived in Memphis at the time of his death sometime between May 15 and June 5. 1861. I believe that he died in Memphis but is buried in Lynchburg, Virginia. The obit may have been in the paper in Memphis, TN, New Branfels, TX, Lynchburg, VA or Charlottesville, VA. I have a copy of the will of William Hunter Meriwether of Memphis. It was written in May 15, 1861 and proven in court at the June term, June 5, 1861. His wife Catherine Whiting Meriwether signed a $50,000 bond to be the administrator on July 2, 1861. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tmsirecords/willofwmhuntermeriwether1861.html The website for the Presbyterian Cemetery in Lynchburg, Virginia has a grave that is probably his. http://files.usgwarchives.org/va/lynchburg/cemeteries/presby03.txt Presbyterian Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia Marble shaft about 10 feet high, mounted on 3 ½ feet base, with an carn deaped top, is this inscription on the bas: To my husband William Hunter Meriwether Thou are gone, but not forgotten At Rest To the left and right, respectively, are two small stones about 1 ½ ft. and these have a dove with a leaf in its beak and underneath "N.D. Meriwether, Died May 31, 1861, Age 16 Months". The other has this: "J.M. Meriweather". This little stone has a rosebud on it. Does anyone live in Lynchburg who could take a picture of these gravestones? Many thanks, Sharon Sharon@MeriwetherSociety.org

    1. [ROOTS-L] Newspaper Archives
    2. Hi, I don't think that you can compare the two who have these papers. For each person it is different. They can't have all the papers so it is a matter if the ones that they have are what you are looking for, They also don't cover several hundred years either so one has to look at the time period. I had wonderful luck with Newspaper Archives. I needed Marrieta or was it Massilon Ohio around the turn of the century. They had just the years that I needed. Some of the things that I got are as follows 1. Obituaries for a whole family 2. News about the business of this family. There were ads for the business they founded. There was history about the company. There was a piece on a fire which took place in the company. 3. Lots of social news about the family including Church and Social Clubs I can tell you that there was so much that I felt that I really knew the family. That is what I look for when I work on genealogy and not thousands of names. Velma

Is there some more information than the index card itself? Can other information be found on the original application for naturalization in New York State? If such an application has been kept that relates to the card index records, how does one find this record? Thank you. A. B. Thailes

The pages I looked at are great and easy to read. Hope everyone enjoys. Obviously not everyone survives to see themselves in a census and I am really looking forward to it.
