What I learned from the presenters on this. 1. Scan them at MAXImum dpi setting. If your scanner has 600 as top, use that. 1200? Use that. 2. Save them in tiff, not jpg or any other format. Tiff is loss-proof. 3. Black and white negative? Be sure scanner surface is CLEAN and CLEAR of any marks or smudges. Use super bright white paper sheet on top of the negatives. Handle the paper with absolute care to ensure smudges or pen/pencil marks whatsoever do not blot it. B/W? Grayscale? Color? You will need to find what is best with your printer/scanner. You don't have to print to see the results. Use Irfanview to view the results for comparsion. PS, the color negatives are nightmare! Requires 3 or more scanning with each color scan (RGB) or you end up with orange color result. W. Nivard I am not familiar with the Epson V700. However, my inclination would be to go with 24 bit color. The reasoning is that this will give you maximum quality. From that scan you can save copies as grey scale or a lesser bit color as needed. Be aware that the color scan will use a lot more storage space. I have an old Nikon Coolscan that provides for multipass scans that I use for slides and negatives. This creates really big files so I routinely make a smaller copy and archive the big ones for future use as needed. By big, I mean in excess of 100 Mgb. I can do color negatives with one scan without problems. It depends on what your associated software will allow. I would suggest some experimentation to see what satisfies you. DPI is important. I go to maximum on that. Some of my scans are at 4000dpi. Try to get at least 1200 dpi. You will see the difference when you try to enlarge. Cheers Don P. I only see this book Names of Foreigners Who Took The Oath Of Allegiance, 1727-1775 The page says "List of Foreigners Imported in the Ship Hope, Daniel Reid, Master, from Rotterdam. Hi, I asked about the Oath of Allegiance. I wonder if someone who has Ancestry could do me a big favor. I unfortunately don't haveit right now. Could someone look up Michael Fickel. He was born c 1709 in Germany. He immigrated to PA. He later died in Frederick CO MD. In the list of records for him there is any entry that has information about him. The four categories are each in Black/green boxes. The second one down is Immigration. At the bottom of that box it says "View Image of Oath to the Government." I am wondering if someone could find that and click to see what it says. I have the list of names of those who took the oath so I do not need that. What I wish to find out is if it has the wording of the Oath that he took. Thanks for any help that you can be. Velma

The Public Profiler site *does* have individual country maps. Do the search first, then click on the country on the world map that you're interested in. Then you can drill down to the state within the country. thank you. I dug deeper, and you're right, though it isn't the one that I remembered and was looking for. the only other thing I recall about the site I'm looking for is that it's percentages are scaled from white to a bright red-orange, with yellows in between and almost blood red for really dense proportions of surnames, where this site's scaling is in blues. also, the other site might not separate the counties/shires or provinces or cantons, but I can't be sure of that, it's been a while since I checked it out. unfortunately I was looking for a very common surname, which isn't helping much. my suspicion of it being Welsh is proved correct, though, the darkest (most concentrated) section is in and around Wales. eep, but it's also Cornwallish, as well, so I still am no-where with it. oh, well, it was worth trying. best, Cornelia On 11.05.2012 13:46, Drew Smith wrote: > The Public Profiler site *does* have individual country maps. > > Do the search first, then click on the country on the world map that > you're interested in. Hi All, Asking for help in reading the place of birth of father of L.A. Loucill b. about 1851 in Canada. Ancestry has him in Franklin, Franklin County, Nebraska in the 1885 Nebraska State Census. All other censuses state both of his parents were born either in Canada or Canada/French. Actually the name should be Soucie. The rest of his family is transcribed Loma (grin).
