    1. Re: [ROOTS-L] MAYO of Los Angeles, CA
    2. Avery Booth Stone
    3. Thank you for your suggestions regarding the location of William Mayo's grave, and his obit. Bill was the son of Marion Seymour Mayo. While his middle name is not available to me at the moment, it is not Ernest, I think. The Mayo's usually picked out a family name and Ernest doesn't fit the bill. Bill was killed in Dec, 1944. Family tradition says Marion died shortly after bringing Bill home from Europe. Uncle Marion's wife was Beatrix [Tomkins] MAYO of Houston. I am so relieved to know where Marion - Doc - is buried. I thank you so much for the information. The Hall of Remembrance William MAYO must be another Bill. Not an uncommon name, it appears per Jean Bunch's Google suggestion. Why Marion's Bill is not in the same location is a puzzle. I''ll try the Westwood cemetery and the other military one in Riverside. Many thanks - Avery

    3. Already tried military cemeteries site- no listing of William Mayo. Riverside National is too recent, it did not exist before 1976. First burials were on Nov 11, 1978, effectively ruled it out. Los Angeles National was in existence but no William Mayo there. Westwood showed only one Mayo - a Nick Mayo, died 1983. David S. 2. Avery Booth Stone
    3. Hello - On this Memorial Day I think often of my cousin, William MAYO, a Lt in the US Army Air Corps, pilot of a B-17 shot down returning from a mission over Germany. His body was brought home by his father, Marion MAYO. They were residents of Los Angeles. I would so appreciate guidance toward finding his obit in CA paper, and the site of his burial. Thank you - Avery

    3. Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I agree with those who say the newspaper got it wrong. As I told Nelda, Myrtle must have said when she read the article, "reports of my death are exaggerated." Seriously, though, if Myrtle died from the effects of the crash a few years later, as appears possible, that's pretty sad. Incidentally, if anyone wants to get a flavor for the times, I suggest looking at this article on genealogybank.com. Beneath the Venters collision article, there is an absolutely bizarre item about a Mrs. Newberry who had just departed Morrisonville for Chicago, as her husband had been found in the dissecting room of the Post Graduate Medical School of CHicago. The body had been "pickled" and taken to the school for use by the students. He had taken ill on the streets of Chicago, died, and was buried in a potter's field. Beneath that, there's an article about 3 members of a family who died from drinking wood alcohol. The good ole days weren't always so good. 3. Dear Barton and Alan, I searched Ancestry.com and found Moses Venters' death certificate. http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&gsfn=moses&gsln=venters&gsby=&gsb2co=1%2cAll+Countries&gsb2pl=1%2c+&gsdy=&gsd2co=1%2cAll+Countries&gsd2pl=1%2c+&sbo=1&sbor=&ufr=0&wp=4%3b_80000002%3b_80000003&srchb=r&prox=1&ti=0&ti.si=0&gss=angs-b&pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&h=1372742&recoff=7+8+62&db=FSIllinoisDeath&indiv=1 It gives Moses' birthdate in 1856 and his parents' names -- David Venters and Artie Reed. At the time of his death Moses' marital status was "divorced". The maiden name of his (ex) wife was Myrtle Elben. In the 1930 census in Shelby County, Illinois, Moses' marital status is still "married", but Myrtle is not enumerated in his household. I thought Alan's theory was an excellent one, but it turns out not to be true. My theory now is that the newspaper account exaggerated in1907 when it said that Mrs. Venters was "fatally" injured. 3. Well, for odd, this one makes the top ten list. "Mr. and Mrs. Moses Venters Sturck by Big Four Fast Train -- Former Killed and wife seriously injured." NOW, that would mean that MOSES Venters was killed. But, as you noted, the article further says "and fatally injured Mrs. Venters." "Mr. Venters was seriously hurt, but will live." BUT, let's go further. 17 Nov 1909, the Daily Ill State Journal had another article. Shelbyville -- Moses Venters settled with the Big Four railroad for fifty dollars for injuries he received when his buggy was wrecked by a train. Hmm. Obviously he lived -- but why settle for only his "injuries?" Why not for wife if she died? To the Census. 1900 has only one Moses in Shelbyville (location of the train accident). Moses is 44, Myrtle is 19. Moses mother, Artie M, 65, is also on the census with them, and son, Charles W, 7/12. In 1910, Moses is 54, Myrtle is 20, married eleven years. Myrtle has had five children, four living -- Charlie W, 10, Orpha I, 6, Clyde L, 4, Paul e, 1 11/12, plus Moses' mother, Artie, now 75. Pretty clear that Myrtle survived the crash. If anyone died, it might have been a child. Or, the newspaper could simply have gotten it wrong. I suggest the latter. It does appear that she died before 1916, as she does not appear on the Ill Deaths and Stillbirths Index. I suggest that checking with the Shelby County Court for a copy of the lawsuit would be helpful. 3. Possibly the Mr. and Mrs. Venters who were struck by the train were the parents of Myrtle's husband? It's not clear from what you posted, that the newspaper article mentions "Myrtle" by name, only "Mrs. Venters." Not a big stretch, though, to imagine that your Moses Venters had a father of the same name. If Myrtle's husband was aged similarly to her (mid 20s in 1907) then his father might have been in his 50s or even his 40s, and could have lived another 30 years or so if he survived the train. 2. ANSWER TO BELOW: Jan, Try Find a Grave again. You will find Warfield Barnes 1853-1923 buried in Elam United Methodist Cemetery in Glen Mills, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Click on the Cemetery and ask for any Barnes. His wife Laura did not come up but there is a listing for an Emma G. "Barnes" Eachus 1880-1962. Probably the daughter. I also tried for first name only of Laura but no one looked promising. You might see if the cemetery can help you with Laura (not everyone is listed on find a grave). Perhaps she is buried there also. Just a thought. Hope this helps a little, Gretchen ORIGINAL QUESTION: From: Jan Bullock <jan@bullocks.org> Subject: [ROOTS-L] Warfield Barnes and Laura Bullock To: roots@rootsweb.com Need some help! Someone contacted me off my website, and this is not my family, but I do try to help. And you'd figure with a name like Warfield Barnes you'd be able to find just oodles of references. Warfield Barnes born CA 1854 Penn. Laura Bullock born CA 1851, both dates by census records. There's a Laura Bullock on the 1870 Delaware census, shown keeping house with Chockley Bullock, age 50 (maybe father). On the 1880 census those two are gone but Warfield Barnes and Laura T. Barnes are in Christiana Hundred with dau Emma. Jump to the 1900 census and Warfield is married to someone else. I'd say that probably Laura Barnes died between 1880-1900, but no record of a death (ancestry) The 1900 census does not show any children for Warfield, and since there is only one child listed that has to be this person's line. I've checked findagrave, ancestry, familysearch, mocavo and Delaware Genweb, all with either no records or very little. The one interesting thing is on the 1880 Laura is listed as being born in Penn, not Delaware. and on the 1870 census where Laura is listed she's born in Delaware. And the two public trees listed on ancestry are the person working this line and another researcher, and nobody has much on these two people. Just at a loss, I know that there are tons of records for Delaware early, where are the late ones? Hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction. Thanks! -- jan www.bullocks.org
