    3. I agree with Nivard. When I enter places in what is now Germany, I enter them as they were at the time. For instance, here is how I have some one place and its events entered: For dates in late 1600's and early 1700's: Ötisheim (Oetisheim), Duchy of Württemberg, Holy Roman Empire (became Baden-Württemberg, Germany in 1918) Most researchers entering Ötisheim (Oetisheim), regardless of the dates, even in the 17th and 18th Centuries, just enter Ötisheim (Oetisheim), Baden-Württemberg, Germany, even when Germany didn't exist. Yes, the place IS in Germany today but it wasn't in the 17th and 18 Centuries! 3. "Generally we should be thinking and recording how things were at the time they happened rather than in todays terms" I agree, but Phil's assertion that it would be "dumb" to state that Sallie's ancestor was born in Germany in 1844 is inappropriate. There's a polite way to point out such information, and that is not it. 3. There was never a Grand Duchy of Hessen Nassau at any time. It was a province within Kingdom of Prussia, 1866 to 1918 The province was created from then independent Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel), the Duchy of Nassau, the Free City of Frankfurt, areas gained from Kingdom of Bavaria and areas gained from Grand Duchy of Hesse, and former Landgraviate of Hesse-Homburg BTW, the flag of Hesse-Nassau is identical to that of the Netherlands. The Dutch royal house originates from the Duchy of Nassau. 3. Hessen-Nassau was one of Prussian provinces. Baden is NOT in Hessen-Nassau at all. It is a separate duchy until 1918. Baden-Baden is the city in Grand Duchy of Baden. Today Baden is joined with Wuerttemberg as state of Baden-Wuerttemberg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baden David On 6/7/2012 1:37 PM, Sallie wrote: > This is so odd. 3. Losheim am See didn't exist either, much longer until after World War II. You will have to read the timeline: Napoleonic Rheinland to 1815 Kingdom of Prussia to 1871 Germany (German Empire) to 1918 Territory of the Saar Basin to 1935 Germany to 1947 The Saar (under French occupation) to 1956 Germany as a separate state to present. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhine_Province http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saar_(League_of_Nations) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saar_(protectorate) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saarland http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Losheim_am_See flip to German side (click Deutsch on left column) for much more details. Separate articles for each of these parishes that are part of Losheim am See in German. These parishes are Bachem, Bergen, Britten, Hausbach, Losheim, Mitlosheim, Niederlosheim, Rimlingen, Rissenthal, Scheiden, Wahlen and Waldhölzbach. Almost all of Britten's population is related to each other and to me. Losheim is just to the east. Do not use "Losheim am See" before 1974. W. 3. Sallie: Phil's correct. It wasn't until 1871 that a whole group of individual states were united into the German Empire. Before that, they were each independently ruled and truly separate countries. To call them "Germany" would be similar to calling the 13 colonies the "United States" prior to 1776--although with the colonies there was a single government (generally English), but there was no single ruling body in Germany before 1871.
