    1. Re: [ROOTS-L] newpaper obituaries ** RE Funeral Homes
    2. Trevia W Beverly
    3. Definitely, small towns vs. cities like Houston yield different problems and search techniques. To find funeral homes in a large city such as Houston, use the City Directories .... they will yield more than you think. Listings of funeral homes, cemeteries, newspapers, etc. for the time period you are interested in. For a list of funeral homes in Houston & Harris County, that date back into the 1880s and early 1900s, check out "At Rest: A Historical Directory of Harris County, Texas, Cemeteries (1822-2001) Including Burial Customs and Other Interesting Facts, With a Listing of Past and Present Communities, Funeral Home and Monument Companies." 1st Edition 1994; 2nd Edition 2001, 3rd edition, 2010, enlarged from 307 to 509 cross-indexed listings. Compiled by Trevia Wooster Beverly (Tejas Publications & Research, Houston, 2001). RE Obituaries, remember that early newspapers did not always have "columns" such as we do today. You need to watch for various headings such as Sexton Reports, Funerals, Deaths, etc. - and remember that sometimes they were placed individually in areas of the newspaper that was filled with other events ..... and are often found in the Classified section because they were paid for and considered such. ~ Trevia Trevia Wooster Beverly Houston, Texas 713-864-6862 Association of Professional Genealogists - http://www.apgen.org/ (Conference Coordinator) Angelina College Genealogy Conference - http://www.angelina.edu/genealogy/genealogy.html Harris County Historical Commission (1995-) - http://www.historicalcommission.hctx.net/ -----Original Message-----

    3. Thanks for the link Nivard. I was aware that this was to happen. I visited the National Monuments Record offices at Swindon a couple of years ago to view the images, and was told of the digitisation project. Its a great resource, but doesn't appear to hold all of the images in the collection at Swindon. > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Message: 1 > Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2012 17:50:01 +0100 > From: Nivard Ovington <ovington1@sky.com> > Subject: [ROOTS-L] Britain from above - Early aerial photos > To: "roots@rootsweb.com" <roots@rootsweb.com> > Message-ID: <4FE9E839.5000303@sky.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed > > > Now live > > > http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/ > > -- > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > ************************************* -- Richard Brown Bromley, Kent U.K. Member of: - E. In checking the email my brother received, I now realize that we need to prove that Azariah Fobes who married Olive Leach is indeed the same Azariah Fobes whose mother was Hannah Standish. I don't know if anyone is researching this line and has information on how I go about proving this? Azariah Fobes was born Oct 28, 1770 in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Care and Identification of Photographs (from daguerreotypes to digital) August 21-24, 2012: Washington DC This workshop will be hosted by the Folger Shakespeare Library FOR FURTHER DETAILS AND ONLINE REGISTRATION: http://gawainweaver.com/workshops/ http://gawainweaver.com/workshop/care-id-photos-2012-washdc/ _________________________________________________________________ What are the defining characteristics of individual photographic processes? How does environment affect the lives of photographic objects? In this 4-day intensive workshop, you will develop identification skills and knowledge about fine art and historic photographic processes, from the daguerreotype to digital prints. This workshop is intended for curators, collectors, archivists, collection managers, and anyone who studies or appreciates photographic prints. Using handheld 60x microscopes and a large set of photographic and photomechanical samples, you will learn how a variety of processes were created, why they look the way they do, and how they deteriorate. Group ID sessions, using a digital microscope and screen projection, will allow participants to practice their identification skills in a guided setting. Preservation topics include enclosures, handling guidelines, environmental monitoring, the effects of temperature and relative humidity on collections, and the importance of cold storage for certain photographic materials. Over 30 different processes are studied in great detail, from how daguerreotypes are made and how they are best preserved, to how long-lasting inkjet prints are created, and how to preserve and store color photographic materials and cellulose nitrate and cellulose acetate-based photographic film. Registration Includes: • 4-day workshop • 240-page color notebook • 60x LED handheld microscope • OPTIONAL: Basic Photographic Sample Set The registration fee for this 4-day workshop is $795 (STUDENT PRICE $645) and includes a handheld microscope and a workshop notebook with lecture handouts, Quick ID Sheets for each process, and a selection of readings on photograph preservation. 3. It also used to be that the funeral home sent the short (not a full obit) death notice to the paper and included the small cost in the cost of the funeral. Then the papers began charging much more for those brief notices and families opted not to pay and there was no notice at all. How foolish of the paper's economics. Wouldn't they be better off with say charging $10 for 10 different two or three-liner announcements netting $100 then charging $25-50 per and none being printed with zero $$$ ??? When a full obit is printed in some cases the family presents it to the funeral director who in turn sends it in. Many folks, (including myself) prefer to send in annual Birthday or Memorials honoring our beloved ones to the paper, which includes the free Legacy page for a year.
