I have been out of contact with the RootsWeb site for a while due to illness. When did the social security index on the site get taken off? I remember a few years some posts that read Ancestry was going to take a lot of the searches off the Roots site so one would have to pay for them on Ancestry. I also let my subscription to Ancestry lapse because I wasn't using it. It was so helpful to use the Roots social security index, shame on Ancestry, What is going to disappear next?
I’ve read that at the LDS site the family trees now at new.FamilySearch are going to be moved to something called Family Tree with a number of improvements added. Do I understand this properly? If so, does anyone know more about it? (When, and how to access) Kirsten
Does this ring the bell for someone? Generation 6. Abraham Estes Abraham Estes, son of Sylvester Estes and Ellen Martin, was born in 1647, in Nonington, Kent County, England. Abraham's baptism record does not survive, however he was mentioned in his mother's will. He was a linen weaver at Sandwich, Kent, by 1672. He married Ann Burton (a widow) of 29 December 1672, at Worth, Kent. She died about 1674. Abraham emigrated to the British colonies in North America, arriving before 1682. On 20 April 1682 Lucy Keeling claimed headright for Abraham and 5 others, their passage to Virginia having previously been arranged and paid for by her deceased father, Thorowgood Keeling. Thorowgood died 8/1679, so it is likely Abraham either arrived or his passage had been arranged prior to this. It was a common practice for wealthy residents in the America's to sponsor emigrants, who would then serve an indenture to pay off the cost of the voyage. The typical indenture lasted seven years, after which the emigrant would be free to marry and obtain his own property. He was married/2 on 29 December 1692, in St. Steven’s Parish, King and Queen County, Virginia, to Barbara Brock, who was born between 1662 and 1667, daughter of Robert Brock, (St Stephens Parish, Virginia Colony) now King & Queen County, Virginia. Since Abraham was still in England by the start of 1673 and was a "freeman" in Virginia by 1683, it is likely he voyaged to the America's around 1674/1675. According to an unsourced claim, Abraham arrived on the "Vana". It has been speculated that his first wife, Ann Burton, died enroute to Virginia, tho' there is no evidence. "The following contribution to 'Estes Trails', October 1981 by Ernest Ests of New Orleans, LA: 'Abraham Easter (Estes) Emigrant: Captain Thorogood Keeling brought in Abraham Estes to Lower Norfolk Parish of Lyndhaven on 20 April 1682 (this was in Old Westmoreland County). Also it was stated in these papers that Abraham wed Barbara Brock, daughter of Robert Brock. See "Early Virginia Immigrants" in Library." In 1683 he was living in New Kent County, Virginia, before settling in the parish of St Stephen's, King and Queen County, Virginia. In 1683 he was a signatory of a petition whilst in St. Stephen's Parish. In 1704 he paid quit rent on 200 acres in King and Queen County. Abraham made a will 21 November 1720, in King and Queen County, Virginia, leaving his estate to his wife, Barbara. Barbara made her will 21 November 1720, leaving part of the estate to several of her children and the remainder to Elisha Estes and Thomas Poor and wife Susanna, for the raising of Moses and Barbara, who upon their parents death's would be raised by Thomas and Susanna Poor. Hi Em Its always a struggle with a name like BROWN to know that you have the right family, I have not been able to replicate your finds as I can only check the US census on familysearch and it appears you need a pay site to view the images for 1860 I did find this entry James Brown United States Census, 1860 birth: 1858 New York residence: 1860 , Rensselaer, New York name: James Brown residence: , Rensselaer, New York ward: 6th Ward Of City Of Troy age: 2 years estimated birth year: 1858 birthplace: New York gender: Male page: 69 family number: 513 dgs number: 4236783 nara number: M653 But could not check to see who else was in the family group The above was found by searching for a James BROWN b1858 New York with parents James and Sarah residence New York Is this the same entry? have you seen the page image this refers to or are you going on a page you already have, in other words are they the same page, I found several matching the above search criteria in the 1860 It corresponds with your place of burial but of course may have no connection, one year is a long time never mind ten At present there is no submitted data on new familysearch, only from extractions, census, baptisms, burials etc etc Your lad who died in 1869, does that record state he was 11 years old? Age was as given by the informant of his death, there may be an error on one or more of several levels, the informant may have been misinformed (unlikely) the age was taken or recorded incorrectly by the official taking the information (often happens but not with one so young) if the lad is in the census age 2 it appears to me that its for a different family to yours Without more information its hard to say for sure, you need to check the 1860 page to be sure Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 12/07/2012 00:43, Emery St.Cyr wrote: > Hello listers, > > I am trying to figure out what family search is saying to me and could use > some clarification. > > I found on Gen Web internments for Rensselaer Co. Hello listers, I am trying to figure out what family search is saying to me and could use some clarification. I found on Gen Web internments for Rensselaer Co. N.Y. an entry for James R. Brown Jr., parents Sarah A. and James R. Brown died 11 Aug 1869. Buried in the old Maple Grove cemetery. Hoosick, N.Y. I came across information on Family search that said he was born abt. 1858 and was in the 1860 census. I have a copy of that census and it only shows Sarah E, and James with a son William H, at 11/12, years old at the census date of 18 July,1860. Sarah was 17 at this time and they both are living with her parents. This would make her 15-16 years old when James Jr. was born I had previously estimated that they were married abt. 1859, but that may have to be adjusted some. What am I missing, or is there an error on Family search's part? Thanks for all help offered. Em Roanoke, VA.
Emery First, what part of "FamilySearch" were you looking in? There are copies/indexes/extractions of records, done by FamilySearch, and posted. There are also "details" about people that were contributed by other researchers. Good and bad. I'm unclear on who was born and who died when. James R Brown, Jr. Sarah A James R Brown, Sr. Which died 11 Aug 1869? I did find this: Brown James R. Jr. 11 Aug 1869 But, nothing about the parents. And, nothing to indicate that this particular James R Brown, Jr, is related to the James R and Sarah A Brown couple. Not even any information on which cemetery he's buried in. I could not find any of this on FamilySearch, but then the website is now so huge, you have to be pretty discrete about search terms, I've found. The "about 1858" statement really says: "I don't know, but sometime around..." So, could have been 1860, or 1861, just as easily. Without knowing exactly where on FamilySearch you found this information, not much else to say. Usually there will be a source for this type of information. What does it say?
