    1. [ROOTS-L] 1900 Census. Occupation N. G. 0-0-2
    2. Rosalyn Gibbs
    3. I was checking a distant relative in the 1900 census and found his occupation listed as N. G. 0-0-2. His name was indexed on Ancestry as Dangerfield E. B. and he was in Pacific Grove, Monterey Count, California, roll 94, page 4B. There were others on the same page whose occupations were N. G. 0-0-4, N. G. 0-0-0 and N. G. 0-0-1. Could anyone explain what this means?

    2. ----- Original Message ----- From: Marion Crawford Sent: Sunday, July 22, 2012 11:42 AM Subject: query help Hi Folks Trying to get a copy of a court case, that involved a child in care. Her name was Grace Fagan and there was a trial in 1895. The reference number that I found in a theses done by a Julielynne Anderson from Saint Mary's Unv. in 2007, was RG 39, Vol 7, #3 (1895) Queen vs Parker and Miller. Would those cases be held in Halifax? Can you folks tell me how or who to ask to get a copy of the transcript or is it possible for one of you to get it? Marion

    2. In regards to what Nivard was saying about so few posts on here; I find it so irritating that I have to scroll thru the original post over and over when people are responding to the same post. I enjoy the list except for this situation... I don't meant to stir up controversy but it would be more encouraging to post on here if every poster would not leave the original post, in addition to what they have to say about it. 3. Hi Alta, it's not clear to me where this icon is or what it is (that you're referring to). Bruce S Haynes comes up in the search results in the 1930 Whatcom County, Washington census but when I click his name, an abstract comes up with a link to see the image at ancestry, where it's not viewable. 3. Hi Eliz, When clicking on your link to familysearch I get an abstract with the message "the image is available at" and the then the option of ancestry and "when using the site at a family history center." Then there is a "Sign in" button below that. Clicking on that just takes me back to the abstract and then the option to see the image at ancestry. I ALWAYS like to see the actual image -- thanks for sending the abstract though. Barton On Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 9:28 PM, Eliz Hanebury wrote: > This from familysearch should have all you need. That will take you to the page where you either enter your user name and password (if you've done this before) or create a new account - free and easy to do. 3. The icon looks like a little camera to me - very small for my old eyes, but it's a grey oblong with a circle in the center with an x in the circle. It's in front of United States Census, 1930 under Bruce S. Haynes on the search results page. The original census page is there and viewable. I looked at it. Are you using <http://www.familysearch.org>? With the connection to Ancestry, it sounds like you're using Roots. 1. [ROOTS-L] New Mailing List & Message Board Announcement for Facebook
    2. I use FB, but am generally repulsed by it. they don't handle it well, people post truly stupid things (a niece posted a photo of her daughters new driver's license, for instance, and that daughter posted a rather revealing photo AND her address and phone number. honestly, what were they thinking?!?) but it got me back in touch with some of my siblings after a family rift, and I have had some interesting conversations with RAOGK volunteers and used other FB genealogy lists, not with a lot of success, but if I were just starting my research I'd be hauling in a goldmine of information from them-and I have had some interesting leads on my more difficult lines thanks to people who are knowledgable in my ancestor's home town. for instance, a lady on RAOGK international sent me the link to Clan Donald House, Skye, yesterday. hopefully they'll be able to help me learn more about my McDonald ancestors. I don't know how long it would have taken me to find out bout the link myself, sometimes I'm too focused on an ancestor tfgo see the bigger picture. but when I spoke to Clan Donald U.S.A., and Clan Donald Canada, they never told me about Clan Donald House, Skye. go figure. from what I've seen on the lists, some are extremely helpful. I was disappointed with NEHGS, though. I posted one or two queries, but was completely ignored by them. Cornelia

    1. [ROOTS-L] This and That Vital Records
    2. Shirley Hornbeck
    3. USING VITAL RECORDS: Birth certificates and death certificates and other vital records contain valuable information, but they are sometimes expensive to obtain. Before you decide not to order them, keep in mind that they sometimes contain additional information that corroborates or conflicts with your present information, such as surname spellings or different dates. Each state maintains vital records and decides where to keep them. Death certificates may be in the possession of the county but the state may also have a copy. Sometimes counties transfer their records elsewhere, possibly to the state archives. Therefore you have to know where to look for the records. Ancestry's Redbook as well as Everton's Handybook for Genealogists list every state and where to find records as well as when the county was formed and the years for which records are available. You may also find that information on the Web if you do some searching for the state's web page. A start at the county in which the event took place should be your first step. A call or a letter to the proper office will usually tell you whether they have the type of record you are looking for and the cost to copy it for you. If they don't have it, they may be able to tell you where to obtain it. Cost could vary depending on whether you need a certified copy or a non-certified copy. Generally, for your research, a non-certified copy will suffice but for legal matters, you may need a certified copy. They both contain the same information. Keep in mind, that a great deal of records were lost during the Civil War due to fire. The Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington, DC 20402 has an inexpensive and helpful booklet "Where to Write for Vital Records" . When you request your records, be sure to provide complete information. Give the full name, and any other names that the record might be under. If you are not sure of the date, give the closest approximation you can provide - or a range of years. Delayed birth certificates are common if the person was born prior to the date of keeping records. They were sometimes obtained by the individual so they could obtain other forms of identification such as a passport or to obtain Social Security. Sometimes recent birth records may not be available to you unless you can prove a relationship to the deceased person. Some states will not provide a birth record at all unless you prove the relationship. If it is your parent, a copy of your own birth record will help. Consider using census records to prove your relationship - or a death certificate if you have one - or an obit. The reasons for these rules, which vary from state to state, is that birth certificates can be used to obtain a new identity by obtaining driver's licenses, passports, etc. Keep in mind when obtaining death certificates, they are only as good as the person's knowledge who gives the information. A child or a sibling would probably be more aware of the facts than a neighbor or a friend who may not know all the facts. Marriage licenses are sometimes the only proof of a marriage - but keep in mind, the marriage may or may not have taken place. Sometimes you can find a church record to confirm that the marriage occurred. More and more records are being transcribed, published in books and/or placed on the web but remember, in transcribing them - they are subject to errors on the part of the transcriber.
