    3. Familysearch has all the censuses indexed (they don't have all of the images easily available) but at least that is another index. Yes, Ancestry Library Edition is less cluttered than ancestry.com. I'm a librarian by trade, as well as a personal subscriber, so I'm familiar with both. ProQuest is the library vendor who provides Ancestry Library Edition to libraries as well as other genealogy collections like Heritage Quest (which also has the censuses and may be available to you from home). ProQuest also has some very nice and helpful how to information in their "Lib Guides". The one covers Ancestry and under the last tab (other information) are various PDF formatted items, including a comparison of ALE and ancestry.com. http://proquest.libguides.com/content.php?pid=322379&sid=2666575 Hope this helps, Megan in La Crosse, WI > > > > > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Message: 1 > Date: Sat, 12 Apr 2014 02:17:21 -0700 > From: velma spring <[email protected]> > Subject: [ROOTS-L] Ancestry > To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> > Message-ID: <[email protected]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii > > In answer to not having ancestry, you might want to try you local library. Mine has the library edition of Ancestry. It has only a few things but it does have all the census records. Even when I have Ancestry I prefer that web site. They have all of the census records and I find them easier to use. The library even let's me print them for free. You might want to try other spellings. Every census before 1900 was spelled differently For my father's ancestors and the name wasn't recognizable. This was probably because they were German and had not yet learned the language. > > Velma > > Sent from my iPad > > >

    3. To Jone and Gary, Yes, I have used that website, and went thru some of the other sites and even google too, but no real luck, I have found them on the 1860 census, but none earlier.. I was hoping to find information on the familysearch site, since it has Holland records. I do not have a subscription to Ancestry, so that is on the last place left to check, if they have more than the unusual information. Thank you for helping :-) CJRaben

    3. http://www.cemeteries.org/genealogy.asp Is this what you want? Genealogy -- Burial Records Search Please enter the Last Name and/or First Name and/or Date of Death below. All or part of the Last Name is alone sufficient for a search. If a name is not coming up, put in the first few letters only, since many names have many variations in spelling. Note: Please do not use spaces or punctuation between letters, for example -- O'Brien should be entered as Obrien. Our eight Catholic Cemeteries will be searched at once from first burials to date. The over 100 parish-operated Catholic Cemeteries within the ten counties of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee are NOT included in the search. Eliz Not Today and Not without a Fight (Anon) For all that has been, thanks. For all that will be, yes. 1. Re: [ROOTS-L] Backup
    2. Pat Mail
    3. Velma, It sounds like you are probably using Windows XP, so I will assume that is your operating system when giving directions. First, put your flash drive into a USB port on your computer. When you do that, you will probably get a small dialogue box that says, "Windows can perform the same action each time you insert a disk or connect a device with this kind of file: What do you want Windows to do?" Then there are a number of choices (probably a scroll bar on the right). Move the scroll bar until you see a folder that says "Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer." Click on that option then click "OK" at the bottom of the box. [If you don't get this dialogue box when you put your flash drive in the computer, see the end of these directions for how to get the flash drive on your screen.] The folder with the contents of your flash drive will appear on the screen. If it appears in 'full-screen' mode (that is, it takes up your entire screen), you will want to make it smaller. (If it is not in full-screen mode, skip to the next paragraph). In the upper right corner (just to the left of the red 'X' that closes the window) is a blue box with two squares--one over the corner of the other. Click on that box to make your window resizable. Now you can move your cursor to the edge or corner of the window. When you see a two-headed arrow, you can click and move the arrow to make the window narrower. Once you have the window the approximate size you want, move your cursor up to the blue band at the top of the window. Click once and you can drag the window to the left of the screen. Now you are ready to open 'My Documents'. Click the green 'start' button at the lower left of the screen. When the menu comes up, click on 'My Computer' in the right column about 1/3 the way from the top. A window will come up showing your hard drive, all storage devices attached to your computer, your 'Documents' folder, etc. This folder may also be either full-screen or resizable. Follow the directions you used above to get the size you want and move it to the right of the screen. Now you are ready to copy files. Go to the left window and locate a file you want to move. Click on it and copy it (either use Control-c or go to the edit menu and click on 'Copy.') Now move your cursor to the right window, double click on the folder where you want to put the document to open it (if you have many folders in your 'Documents' folder this may require a few steps to open folders within folders to get to the one you want). Once you are in the folder where you want to put the file, paste it into the folder (either use Control-v or go to the edit menu on this window and click on 'Paste' to paste the copied file to the desired folder). You can copy and paste several files at a time if they all go to the same destination folder. When you are in the window for the flash drive, click on the first file you want. Then hold the 'Shift' key and click on the last file that goes in the same folder. You will notice that all of the folders in between are highlighted. Now when you copy and paste, all of the files will be moved. If the files you want to move to a particular folder are not right next to each other, you can still move more than one at a time. Click on the first one. Then, hold down the control key ('Ctrl') and click individually on each of the other files that you want to move together. Once you have all of them selected, you can now copy them and paste them to your destination folder. **Now, if you didn't get a dialogue box to open your flash drive in a folder, here is what you can do. Click on the green 'Start' button then click on 'My Computer' as you did to open a window with your documents. When you do this, you will get a list of the various drives on your computer. There should be one that says 'Removable Disk' followed by a letter. That should be your flash drive (if you also have a back-up drive attached to your computer, that will show up as a removable disk as well--you may have to open (double-click) one of them to decide which is the one you want). If the one you open isn't the right one, click on the folder with the green 'up' arrow in the menu bar at the top of the window to go back "up" to the list of devices and choose a different one). Once you have your flash drive 'open' the directions above for re-sizing and moving it will work. If this isn't clear, let me know and I'll try to clear up any confusion. 3. Emery, When I was ready to reinstall my downloaded RootsMagic Program from Windows XP to Windows 7, I called RootsMagic Technical Support Phone: 1-801-489-3102 (Mon-Fri 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.). I had my registration key available when I made the call and if I remember correctly the download to the new computer was made at that time.
