Greetings, The Fort Worth Central Library presents the following workshop, "Ancestry-in-Action: Unpuzzling Your Past and Preserving Your Family Tree" on Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm in the Tandy Lecture Hall. Please note that morning refreshments begin at 10:30 am. We will feature three speakers at this workshop: Judy Knight will present, "Cemetery Dowsing." Trouble finding the grave of an ancestor even though you know the right cemetery? Judy Allen Knight discusses how grave dowsing can help you locate unmarked graves and provide clues about the person's identity. Knight, a genealogical speaker with more than 40 years' experience in family history, is actively preserving her family's Tarrant County cemetery. In 2001, the site was declared a Historic State Cemetery. She has served in multiple capacities with the Texas State Genealogical Society. Betsy Mills will present, "Identifying Old Photographs: Preserving and Sharing." Betsy Mills reveals how to solve puzzling old family photographs by analyzing the type of photograph, people and styles, and other often-missed clues. Learn also to preserve these memories by scanning and sharing them. Mills, part of the TXGenWeb Project and State Coordinator for ARGenWeb, became a genealogist when she was 10 years old and discovered an empty family tree in her baby book. She promptly began working to fill in the blanks. Mills currently serves as President of the Lamar County Genealogical Society and Lamar County Historical Commission. Larry McCarty will present, "Daniel Quarles: Reconnected after 150 Years." Larry McCarty presents the history of African-American Daniel Quarles, who might have been the model for the character Jim in Mark Twain's classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. McCarty discusses the Quarles family's migration and subsequent reconnection, link between John A. Quarles and Samuel Clemens, and the ongoing Mark Twain archaeological dig in Florida, Missouri. McCarty has spoken about black history at numerous library, university and genealogical society events, and on television. Our agenda for the day will be: 10:30 am - 11:00 am - Morning Refreshments 11:00 am - 12 pm - Cemetery Dowsing Presented by Judy Knight 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm - Independent Lunch 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm - Identifying Old Photographs: Preserving and Sharing Presented by Betsy Mills 2:30 pm - 3:00 pm - Break with Refreshments 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm - Daniel Quarles: Reconnected After 150 Years Presented by Larry McCarty Please call (817)392-7740 or e-mail: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> to reserve your spot! I would appreciate assistance from any person who might have and could look up some information for me from the school yearbooks for Pine Ridge Middle School in Naples FL for the years 1986 - 1988. Or, who might just recall who the basketball coach was for those years. Thank you and please reply to [email protected]

The Southern California Genealogical Society has released the schedule of live-streamed sessions that will be available FREE at the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree June 6-8, 2014. A total of 14 free sessions will be streamed over the three days of Jamboree. The sessions are open to the public and can be attended by anyone with a broadband Internet connection. The list of classes and speakers can be found at http://www.scgsgenealogy.com/Jamboree/2014/LiveStream.html. "The sessions span all experience levels and a wide range of topics," explained Leo Myers, Jamboree co-chair. "The speakers are among the most knowledgeable and respected instructors in genealogy today, and we are so grateful that they have agreed to share their knowledge with family historians around the world." The live streaming is sponsored in part by Jamboree's diamond sponsor, Ancestry.com. Many of the streamed sessions will eventually be accessible to SCGS members in the webinar archive, which holds more than 100 hours of instructional videos that are available on demand to members of the society. In addition, five live-streamed sessions will be available for viewing from the Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2014 conference on Thursday, June 5. Because that event is produced by ISOGG and SCGS and it does not accept financial support, the live-streamed sessions are available on a pay-for-view basis. An All-Day Pass is also offered. Hello all, I have and uncle that died in Worcester, MA. In 1959 and his service was in North Adams, MA. Where he was born. I am assuming that his death certificate would be in Worcester. Is this correct? Here is the information Charles L Brown b.9 March 1912, North Adams, MA. d. winter of 1959 Worcester, MA. (his body was held over in a vault until spring til he could be buried.) Karen According to the history I read, she married John Wilson in 1835, and had previously been married to Romualdo Pacheco, and had children. According to one source, she was born in 1812, married Pacheco at age 14, and had two sons, Mariano (1830) and Romauldo (1831), and was only 23 in 1835 at her marriage to John Wilson. The 1850 census shows them with Juana, 11, Maria, 9, Juan, 7. Mariano was 22, Romaldo was 18. I don't see Ramona II at all. Is she Maria Ramona? Or Juana Ramona? So, the only "candidate" I see for the boy would be Juan, and if so, that would put Ramona at 38ish and Juan at 7ish, if the photo was done around 1850. And, that boy doesn't look over seven to me. Only problem is that this is pretty early for this photography. Too bad we can't see what the medium was for the photo. Do you have any earthly idea where the original is? That would help. You can tell a lot from the medium in terms of age. Looks like it might be a cabinet card (size?) in which case it's about 1866-forward. Anyway, another problem, especially this early, is that most of the "example" photographs are from the east, and are not heavily influenced by the Spanish/Mexican culture, as you would find here. The flounced shirt reminds me more of the late '60s or early 70's, I have one (it will go to Karen, but the list won't have it) that is of my great-grandmother, with similar lines, and was taken around Eugene, Oregon. This is with her first husband, whom she married in 1870, when she was about 20. The dress is small waisted, the sleeves are not quite leg-o-mutton, the skirt has flounced edging. I don't know if that gives you a "hint" but I hope it does.
