Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mAEBAIB/588 Message Board Post: Reprinted with Permission - Albuquerque Journal - Friday, March 28, 2003 Migrant Worker Betty Sepúlveda Earned Doctorate By Paul Logan Journal Staff Writer Betty Sepúlveda truly lived the American dream, her daughter said. A migrant worker in her youth who left high school after her sophomore year, Sepúlveda would later earn a doctorate, become a respected educator, serve President Reagan and be honored as a distinguished citizen of Denver. The New Mexico native lived in a number of states before returning to Albuquerque, where she spent the last year of her life. Sepúlveda died March 12 of complications from several falls. She had turned 80 on Jan. 26. Sepúlveda was known for her determination and vigor, said her daughter, Dolores Weeks of Albuquerque. She could be very headstrong, Weeks said; and once she set her mind to doing something, she did it. Although she stood only about 4-foot-4 and weighed around 100 pounds, Sepúlveda wasn't hampered by her size. Weeks said her mother believed a person wasn't measured from the ground up — but from the shoulders up. Sepúlveda was upset about having her education interrupted, but she obeyed her mother, Weeks said. "She just never wanted kids to experience the same frustration," her daughter said, "and to be able to fulfill their own potentials to the extent that they chose to." Born in the tiny northern New Mexico village of Vallecitos, Betty Romero was 4 when her family moved briefly to Alamosa, Colo., then to Council Bluffs, Wyo. Her parents separated in 1931. She, her two older brothers and her mother were migrant workers during the Great Depression. Her mother did not regard education as a priority, so Romero had to leave high school early. Romero's mother arranged a marriage between her daughter, who was 17, and the Rev. Thomas Sepúlveda, a Methodist minister who was 11 years older, her daughter said. The Sepúlvedas lived many places, including Wagon Mound, El Paso and Roswell. Weeks recalled attending nine elementary schools during her father's career. While in Waco, Texas, Betty Sepúlveda received a full scholarship to attend Baylor University. She earned an education degree in 1953 while caring for her children, tutoring students in Spanish, serving as the church's music director and operating an afternoon kindergarten, Weeks said. "She used to talk about how she didn't have time to eat," her daughter said. "Her big thing was eating Hershey bars, running from class to class." Later, she taught at a Pueblo, Colo., school while commuting 84 miles round trip to Colorado Springs for a master's degree from Colorado College. While a first-grade teacher in Denver, she earned a doctorate from the University of Denver. She was one of the early educators in the 1960s to recognize children with dyslexia, her daughter said. Dyslexia is a condition in which an individual with normal vision is unable to interpret written language. She said her mother was showing teachers how "to recognize children with reading disabilities at a time when reading disabilities were just beginning to be acknowledged." Sepúlveda devised innovative reading methods to help children who had reading disabilities. The Denver Public Schools used her reading methods throughout the district, her daughter said. Eventually, she became an administrator — a curriculum services instructional consultant for the school system. Sepúlveda received a number of honors during her career, including an appointment by President Reagan to the Intergovernmental Advisory Council on Education and the Denver Distinguished Citizen's Award. As a council member, Sepúlveda made several trips to Washington, D.C., to help the president understand the needs of schools, her daughter said. The Denver award was in recognition of Sepúlveda's more than three decades of service to the school system. Her ashes will be placed in a niche next to her husband's in Denver. He died in 1990. Survivors include a son, Thomas Sepúlveda Jr. of Cleveland. Copyright 2003 Albuquerque Journal
