Romero, 65, of Albuquerque, NM passed away due to illness on August 8, 2003. Lionel was born August 11, 1937, to Flavio and Delores Romero, in Albuquerque. Lionel attended Elementary, Jr. High and High School in Alb. He excelled in athletics at a very young age and was offered a major league baseball contract after high school, but deferred for a full athletic scholarship to the University of Arizona. At the University of Arizona, Lionel was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, and lettered in football and baseball; however, his athletic career was cut short due to injuries. Lionel transferred to George Washington University in Washington, D.C and graduated with a BS in Business Administration in 1962. Lionel was a successfully Farmers Insurance Agency for 20 years, and the youngest recipient of the President Council's award. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Lionel will be remembered as a confidant, caring, fearless, humorous and above all, a very honest man. ! Survivors included his son Christopher Lionel, daughter-in-law, Jennifer, daughter, Elizabeth Barbara Grimsley, son-in-law, Wendell, grandson, Christopher Wendell Grimsley, brothers, Leonard and Paul of Arizona, former wife of 32 years, Barbara M.E. Romero, and many family and friends. A rosary and prayer service will be held on August 21, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at Aspen Funeral Alternatives Chapel at 1935 Juan Tabo NE. Our beloved Bernie died peacefully on Thursday, August 14, 2003, surrounded by family and friends. Bernie is survived by her daughter, Michelle Ortiz, parents Gene H. and Minerva Romero, and five siblings, Evelyn"Eve" Romero and husband Jon Mustonen, Gary Romero and wife JoAnn, Gene F. Romero, Claire Romero and husband David Bomse, and Larry Romero and wife Irma Chavez. She was also a loving aunt to four nieces, Misa, Andrea, Marisol, and Sofia, and four nephews, Alex, Christopher, Aaron and Gene. Bernie will also be sorely missed by her uncle and aunts, Boleslo and Dora Romero, Soveida Gonzales, and Helen Crowe, as well as numerous cousins. Bernie was born in Albuquerque on July 22, 1947. After graduating from Valley High School in 1965, she moved to Santa Fe where she worked for the state. Back in Albuquerque, Bernie pursued a career in the food industry as a caterer, restaurant manager, and cook. Gourmet cooking was top among her many passi! ons and through much of her life Bernie created sumptuous feasts for friends and family. We miss our dear Bernie but her love of music, antiques, floral design, good literature, and vintage films will always live in our hearts. Funeral services are pending. Direct cremation has taken place in Albuquerque. The family expresses their gratitude to the medical staff of the Albuquerque Regional Medical Center and Vista Care who provided medical and hospice care for Bernie during the last few weeks of her life.

He was born in Las Vegas, N.M., on March 12, 1917, to the late Palemon Romero and Agapita Garcia Romero. He was united in marriage on Aug. 6, 1946, in Denver to Adela Tafoya. He retired from the Storrie Project Water Association, where he was employed as a ditch rider for seven years. He also worked with Dr. J.C. Shaw and was partners in a meat market and horse trading business. He was a former member of the San Miguel County sheriff's posse. He did horse training at the Floyd M. Stables in Denver, training five gated horses, including trotters, jumpers and racing horses. He braided whips, head stalls and ropes. A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Palemon and Agapita Romero; brothers, Arturo Romero and Benito Romero; daughter, Mary Louise Romero; grandson, Delfinio Romero. He is survived by his loving wife, Adela Romero of the family home in Las Vegas, N.M.; daughters and sons, Mary Ann Romero and husband Henry, Jean Velasquez, Sonny Romero and wife Mary Ann and Benny Romero and wife Elaine, all of Las Vegas, N.M.; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; brother, Freddie Garcia of Albuquerque; sister-in-law, Inez Romero of Denver; and many other relatives and friends. My grandfather was originally from La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. My grandmother was from Santa Rosalia. They moved to Mexicali, Mexico where his parents farmed. In La Paz the family were divers. One of the brothers died in a diving accident and that is when they moved to Mexicali. The family became a migrant farmworking family traveling up to Northern California to work the crops. My grandparents had 9 sons and two daughters. I would appreciate any information.

He taught at Kansas State University, where he contributed to the school's bilingual education program. He also taught at New Mexico Highlands University, California State, Jemez Springs High School, and worked as an educator for NASA. Later in life, he returned to New Mexico, and worked as a volunteer fireman while restoring a vintage farmhouse. His passion was to ensure that children, regardless of their socioeconomic status, would have a chance for a better life through education.
