Hi Fred Family legend says that they were Spanish. However, all I have is my 3 great grandfather being born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1830 and marrying an Australian girl in Victoria Australia in 1854. How / when / why??? they came here I do not know. They have been rather elusive. I have all the descendants down to me, I just can't pin their arrival down. Cheers Karen in Australia - Karen, How in God's name did a ROMERO find his/her way to Australia in the mid-1800s? Was Spain a factor? Just curious. Fred Romero Simi Valley, CA
Hi everyone The dates for my last message should have been mid 1800's to late 1800's not 1900's I am an idiot <g> Bye Karen >I have an old family photograph that I believe to be a member of the ROMERO family from the Albury area of NSW Australia. The family was connected with the QUINN family<
Hello everyone I have an old family photograph that I believe to be a member of the ROMERO family from the Albury area of NSW Australia. The family was connected with the QUINN family Is anyone else researching this particular family? I'm trying to find someone who may be able to ID the photo for me. It looks to have been taken mid to late 1900's, of course that's only a guess. If anyone knows anything about this family let me know and I can email the photograph to you. I apologise for cross posting this message but I'm not 100% sure which list to ask I also know this is a very long shot ;-) Thanks and have a great day! Karen
At this end of the world Romeros are scattered somewhat randomly throughout the US, but the mother load seems to be centered in New Mexico -- a state west of Texas and east of Arizona. History shows that 300 years ago Spanish settlers traveled north from Mexico (Mexico City?) and they finally stopped at what is now known as the city of Santa Fe. The road from Mexico to Santa Fe was traveled for many years, and Spanish settlers -- no doubt decedents from the Spanish conquistadors who conquered Mexico in the 1500s -- set up a colony in America even before the Pilgrims (from England) landed on the eastern US. There is no doubt that a few Romeros were part of the migration, and all these many years later New Mexico has the largest population of people named Romero in America. I was born and raised in California, but my father, who never really knew his father, told me that my grandfather had been a native of New Mexico. We don't know much about this man, other than his possible connection to New Mexico. But my heart tells me he was probably an adventurous sort who no doubt traced his roots back to the Spanish migrants who worked their way north from Mexico into what is now the United States. I had a chance to visit New Mexico a few years ago and I spoke to several locals regarding the history of the Romero name in that state. Aside from the fact that they are literally everywhere, I was somewhat amused to find out that many of the men have a reputation form being (how do I say this delicately?) overly amorous and possessed by a bit of the blarney. Having lived a robust life of almost 60 years myself I can say the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. Not having had the chance to know my grandfather or anything about his life and history, all I can say is if he is anything like my father -- and I can truly say I'm a chip off the old block -- then a yearning for adventure and challenge and gusto seems to be a common thread with many of the men who carry the name. And when you think about how the first Romeros probably came to the New World (as soldiers for the Spanish Monarchy, landing in Mexico, South America, the Caribbean and other tempting ports), then one would have to assume that a small portion of their spirit may still live within some of us even today. Like I said, a gift for blarney goes with the package. -----Original Message----- From: Karen Mulvey [mailto:karen@spreadtheword.com.au] Sent: Saturday, November 06, 2004 8:05 PM To: ROMERO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [ROMERO] ROMERO PHOTOGRAPH Hi Fred Family legend says that they were Spanish. Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mAEBAIB/719 Message Board Post: Los Angeles Times, Feb 12, 1885: Death of a Very Old Citizen. On the 24th day of last December there died at Los Nietos, in this county, one of the very oldest native Californians in the State. His name was Jose Maria Romero. He was over 100 years of age, or, as near as his friends could make out, almost 108 years old, and that was the age his family gave to the parish priest at San Gabriel, when he was buried, December 26. Senor Romero saw the foundation of the new San Gabriel Mission, and was present, with his father, at its dedication, where he told the writer of this some years ago, he remembered seeing the late venerable Dona Eulalie de Guillem, who died a few years ago at a very advanced age, who was there with her husband and two or three small children, although she was still quite a young woman (doncella). Don Jose was a brother of Mrs. Verdugo, the wife of Don Julio Verdugo, the former owner and grantee of the Verdugo or San Rafael rancho; also of Dona Isabel Dominguez, mother of Mrs. Carpenter, of Old Los Nietos, and of the mother of the late Mrs. Wm. Wolfskill, and was therefore related to the Verdugo, Dominguez, Lugo and Wolfskill families, and their descendants. It used to be very interesting to listen to his account of the old and primitive times here in Southern California, when the Missions of San Gabriel, San Fernando and San Diego, and the pueblo of Los Angeles were in their infancy. Senor Romero became very inform during the latter part of his life, though he retained the use of his senses nearly up to the last. H.D.B. February, 1885.
