I have a letter dated 18 Aug 1947, Lafe, AK from a Mrs J.A.Harris (Zephel) that stated her husband will be retiring from Post Office, been there 30 years. I am trying to make a connection between her and the surnames of THOMPSON, Augusta Malinda, BROWN, John, they raised SANDERS, Merritt that married a Gladys ????, that had one daughter named Judith Ann. After the deaths of Augusta and John, my mother and father raised Merritt. He served in WWII as an XRAY technician. His hospital transport ship was attacked by German subs. From complications of his injuries he died in a Memphis army hospital in 1945. My parents were unable to attend the funeral because of the war going on and the lack of stamps to purchase fuel, etc. This Zephel Harris corresponded with my mother updating her on Merritt's condition. This is my first knowledge of any of this. I found these two letters in my mom's keepsakes. The letter notifying my mom of Merritt's death was dated 22 Oct 1945. It states, all three brothers came for the funeral, Tom, Vernon, Leroy. I assume she is talking about Merritt's brothers. Zephel two sisters, Nell and Ola. His funeral services was performed at "First Lafe Church". In the Pastor's closing comments he stated that this was his hardest funeral to preach because my son was killed in Germany this last march and was buried there where he fell. Any assistance in the above surnames would be gratefully appreciated.
