Hello all, I was not trying to start a war or to offend anyone, I was simply defending and agreeing with the person who had written, apparently 16(?) messages to the ROLL-CALL-L list. (I am deliberately leaving out all names here, you probably got them or have them to refer back to if you need names.) Someone immediately wrote a note in regards to all of those e-mails saying something along the lines of "I don't like getting all of these e-mails from one person... It is a waste of space... You should be putting them all in one note...etc" Then the first person wrote back to say that this had been discussed and that he/she could write as many as he/she wanted in order to clearly identify her information. I was agreeing that it is extremely helpful to me, and apparently others, to have each request CLEARLY identified. (I know that on many of the lists I subscribe to - all genealogical in nature - this is a requirement, because my own e-mails have been returned when not in proper format. It was a pain to learn, but in the end more helpful because some people do not read all of the mail, and if they see my names and dates and places of origin, then they will be able to respond if they are interested or can/want to help.) Of course I open all mail that seems even remotely helpful (which is why I open all of the ones that are labeled "surnames" which is how I saw the flaming post that started this issue in the first place), but on my service in particular, if I don't clear my "in box," they will start rejecting mail; so because I can't be at my computer constantly, I have to read and save or delete the mail quickly before it builds up. The clear information is very helpful to me. I am on a variety of lists because I am seeking my heritage. and I feel that all of these lists are very helpful in this quest. If I don't have time to read every post, do I not still have a right to subscribe and take part as much as I can? It is very nice for me to be able to "weed them out" as it were. AND - I really do not feel that it is an undue burden for someone to write their many e-mails to any list; so I was saying that to the person(s?) that were so miffed by someone doing that in defense of the person who had. I am filling my time looking for my roots. I know where and when they came into this country, and the names that I am working on - so some of the mail doesn't apply to me. I have 8.67MB of mail in my folder that I have kept concerning my interests and names, and I will continue to save the things that apply to me. I don't feel that I am missing out. My point was that if one person writes 600 pieces of mail and they are clearly marked, then I am just as happy as if they had written 6 and labeled them unclearly. I was taking issue with the idea that it is unfair to write lots of mail in search of ancestors. I feel very strongly that we should be able to write as many as we need in order to find them. Sorry if I was unclear about that. The notes I was responding to came in yesterday. Again, I was not asking anyone to change what they are doing. I was agreeing that it is fine with me if someone writes a ream of mail, and I like it even more when it is clearly marked. Sorry to offend, as that is not what I was trying to do! Sincerely, Ella McCrystle
