KEARNEY, GEN. PHILIP, born in New York City June 2, 1815. Educated at Columbia College, but entered 1st dragoons as first lieutenant 1837. Visited Europe and served in French army. In 1840 returned to United States and served on staff of General Scott. Served in Mexican war, and lost an arm at Mexico. In 1851 went to California and Oregon. In 1859 served in French army in Italy. Entered Union army in 1861 and fought in battle of Bull Run. Made brigadier-general of volunteers and served under Franklin and Heintzelman. Fought in battle of Williamsburg, in the Peninsula actions, and in the operations from Rapidan to Warrenton. Made major-general of volunteers July 7, 1862. Forced Jackson's corps back on Longstreet's men at second battle of Bull Run. Was killed at the battle of Chantilly September 1, 1862. JOHNSTON, GEN. JOSEPH ECCLESTON, born in Prince Edward county, Va., February, 1807. Graduated at West Point 1829. Served in engineer corps till outbreak of Civil war. Entered Confederate service April 22, 1861. In command of Confederate forces in Virginia during early part of 1862. Wounded at Fair Oaks May 31, 1862. Made lieutenant-general in November, 1862, and assigned to Department of Tennessee. Strove to relieve Vicksburg, then besieged by Grant, 1863. After the defeat of Bragg at Chattanooga November 25, 1863, Johnston took command of all the Confederate forces in the Southwest, with rank of general. Resisted Sherman in his campaign from Chattanooga to Atlanta, but without success. Succeeded by General Hood. Assumed command in the Carolinas, with orders to oppose Sherman's northern march. Fought the battle of Bentonville. Surrendered to Sherman at Durham Station, after Lee had surrendered at Appomattox. Retired to private life. Made a commissioner of railroads 1885. Died March 21, 1891. JOHNSTON, GEN. ALBERT SIDNEY, born in Kentucky 1803. Graduated at West Point 1826. Entered Texan service 1836. Appointed commander-in-chief 1838, and Secretary of War 1840. Fought through the Mexican war. Received major's commission in U. S. army 1849. Led Utah expedition of 1857, with rank of brevet brigadier. Transferred to Department of Pacific. Resigned his national commission May, 1861, and entered Confederate army. Commander-in-chief at battle of Shiloh April 6, 1862, on which date he was killed in action.
