LOGAN, GEN. JOHN ALEXANDER, born in Jackson county, Ill., February 9, 1826. Entered the Mexican war as a private, and retired as lieutenant. Studied law. In 1858 elected to Congress as a Democrat. Re-elected in 1860. In August 1861, resigned his seat and entered Union service as colonel of a volunteer regiment. Joined Grant at Cairo. Engaged in attacks on Forts Henry and Donelson. Wounded at latter place. Promoted to brigadier. Served in northern Mississippi. Made major-general of volunteers November, 1862. Operated with Sherman in his Atlanta campaign, and for a brief time had command of the Army of the Tennessee. Accompanied Sherman on his march to the sea, and into the Carolinas. With him until surrender of Johnston April 26, 1865. Served several terms in Congress. Chosen U.S Senator 1871, and again in 1879. Nominated for Vice-Presidency of the United States in 1884, but failed of election. Again chosen to U.S Senate May, 1885. Died in Washington, D.C., December 26, 1886. LEE, GEN. WILLIAM HENRY FITZHUGH, born at Arlington, VA., May 31, 1837. Appointed lieutenant in United States army in 1857, and served in Utah campaign. Joined Confederate forces in 1861, and made brigadier-general October, 1862. Captured and exchanged. Promoted to major-general of cavalry April, 1864. Led his division from the Rapidan to Appomattox, and performed brilliant service. Elected to Congress in 1888 as a Democrat. Died in 1891.
