    3. McPHERSON, GEN. JAMES BIRDSEYE, born in Sandusky, Ohio, November 14, 1828. Graduated at West Point 1853. Promoted to captain 1861, Entered Union army, and appointed lieutenant-colonel, November 12, 1861. Promoted to major-general of volunteers, October 8, 1862. Attached to Grant's staff and served at Forts Henry and Donelson, and at Shiloh and Corinth. Promoted to command of a division Bolivar, Tenn., and in 1862 - 63, co-operated with Grant's movements. Led a corps in battle of Fort Gibson. Routed part of Johnston's army at Raymond May 12, 1863. Aided Grant in the battle of Champion Hills, and the siege of Vicksburg. Made brigadier-general in regular army August 1, 1863. In 1864, advanced to command of Army of the Tennessee, and conducted important operations around Huntsville, Ala. Commanded Sherman's left during the Atlanta campaign. Was killed before Atlanta July 22, 1864. McDOWELL, GEN. IRWIN, born at Columbus, Ohio. October 15, 1818. Graduated at West Point in 1838. Remained as instructor of mathematics till 1845. At breaking out of Civil war, made a brigadier and placed in command of the Federal troops at Washington. In command of Union army when defeated at Bull Run July 21, 1861. McClellan took command, and McDowell was again placed in charge at Washington. Major-general of volunteers March 14, 1862, and commander of Department of Rappahannock April 14, 1862. Took distinguished part in the battles during Pope's campaign, but relieved of his command September 5, 1862. President board of retiring officers 1863 - 64. In command of Department of Pacific July, 1864, to June, 1865. Made a major-general in 1872, and held command in the various departments, till retired in 1882. Died in San Francisco May 4, 1885. McCULLOCH, GEN. BEN, born in Rutherford county, Tenn., November 11, 1811. Fought with General Houston in Texas, and participated at St. Jacinto. Elected to Texas legislature and made major-general of State militia. A distinguished member of the Texas Rangers in the Mexican war. Resided in California 1849 - 52. Returned to Texas and made U. S. Marshal. Joined Confederate army and made brigadier-general May 14, 1861. Joined his forces to those of Price and the defeated Generals Lyons and Sigel at Wilson's Creek. Led his division at Pea Ridge, where he was killed March 8, 1862.
