TERRY, GEN. ALFRED HOWE, born at Hartford, Conn., November 10, 1827. Studied law. Entered Civil war as colonel. Made brigadier April, 1862. Participated in capture of Fort Wagner. In connection with Porter's fleet, captured Fort Fisher January 15, 1865. Promoted to brigadier in regular army and to major-general of volunteers. Brevetted major-general in regular army March 13, 1865. Made full major-general March 3, 1886, succeeding General Hancock. Retired from army 1888. Died December 16, 1890. SYKES, GEN. GEORGE, born at Dover, Del., October 9, 1822. Graduated at West Point 1842. Served in Florida, Texas, and through the Mexican war. Promoted to brevet captain for gallantry. Appointed major of 14th Infantry in May, 1861, and brigadier-general in September. Fought through the Peninsula campaign, and made major-general of volunteers November, 1862. Led 5th corps at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and was otherwise actively engaged till removed to Fort Leavenworth in 1864. died at Fort Brown, Texas, February 9, 1880. STUART, GEN. JAMES EWELL, born in Patrick county, Va., February 6, 1833. Graduated at West Point 1854. Fought on frontier for three years. Joined Confederates 1861, with rank of colonel. Fought under Jackson and Lee, and was the most effective cavalry leader of the South, being both bold and rapid. Won the rank of general. Wounded at Yellow Tavern, Hanover county, Va., and died from his wounds June 12, 1864. SMITH, GEN. EDWARD KIRBY, born in St. Augustine, Florida, May 16, 1824. Graduated at West Point 1845. Took part in Mexican war. Taught at West Point. Fought on frontier 1855. Entered Confederate service 1861, with rank of lieutenant-colonel of cavalry. Made a famous record in Department of southwest as manager of blockade running, and received full rank of general. He did notable field service and won many battles. President of Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company 1866 - 68. Chancellor of University of Nashville 1870 - 75. Professor of mathematics in University of Sewanee, Tenn. SMITH, GEN. CHARLES FERGUSON, born at Philadelphia, Pa., April 24, 1807. Graduated at West Point 1825, and served as professor of tactics 1829 - 42. Served in Texas campaign and through Mexican war. In 1855 became lieutenant-colonel of 10th Infantry, and engaged in Utah expedition. In command of Federal forces at Washington at outbreak of Civil war. Transferred to Kentucky as colonel of 3d Infantry. Participated in capture of Forts Henry and Donelson. Made a major-general of volunteers. Died at Savannah, Tenn., April 25, 1862, while preparing for the movement on Shiloh. SLOCUM, GEN. HENRY W., born at Delphi, Onondaga county, N.Y., September 24, 1827. Graduated at West Point 1852. Served in artillery, and resigned 1856. Practiced law in Syracuse, and served one term in State Legislature. Reentered army with rank of colonel in 1861, and was wounded at Bull Run August, 1861, promoted to brigadier-general. Fought in Peninsula campaign and promoted to major-general. Took command of 12th army corps and fought at Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Conspicuous in southwest in 1864, succeeding Hooker in command of 20th corps. Led Sherman's left wing in his march to the sea and into the Carolinas. Located at Brooklyn and defeated for office of Secretary of New York. Elected to Congress 1868, 1870, and 1874.
