    3. SIGEL, GEN. FRANZ, born in Baden November 18, 1824. Came to America 1852. Organized a regiment in Missouri in 1861, and opposed the Confederates. Made brigadier May, 1861. Won the battle of Pea Ridge. Transferred East and fought in the battle of second Bull Run. In command of eleventh corps, under Pope, September 14, 1862. In March, 1864, placed in command of Department of West Virginia. Defeated by Breckinridge May 15, 1864. Resigned and became editor of Baltimore "Weeker". Made collector of Port of New York 1867. Appointed pension agent 1886. An author of repute. SICKLES, GEN. DANIEL E., born in New York October 20, 1823. Graduated at New York University. Studied law and admitted to bar 1844. Member of State Legislature 1847. Attorney of New York in 1853, and same year secretary of legation in London. In State Senate 1855. Elected to Congress 1857 and 1859. Entered Union service 1861, as commander of Excelsior brigade, and distinguished himself on the Peninsula, at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, where he lost a leg. In 1865 Commissioner of South American Republics. In 1866 appointed colonel of 42d Regular Infantry. After Gettysburg, made major-general of volunteers. 1865 - 67 commanded 2d Military District, with headquarters at Columbia, S.C. May, 1869, placed on retired list of army. In June, 1869, appointed Minister to Spain. Resigned in 1873. Appointed sheriff of Kings county 1890. Resumed practice of law in New York City. SHIELDS, GEN. JAMES, born in Dungannon, Ireland, in 1810. Came to the United States at age of sixteen, studied law, and in 1843 was chosen judge of the Supreme Court of Illinois. Fought Scott and Taylor in the Mexican war, and was made brigadier-general. U. S. Senator from Illinois 1849 - 55. Went to Minnesota and sent to U.S. Senate from that State. Went to California and thence to Missouri, where he practiced law. Participated in the early operations of the Civil war. A Railroad Commissioner 1874 - 79, and afterwards a member of the State Legislature. Died in Ottawa, Iowa, June, 1879.
