GEORGE GORDON, born of American parents in Cadiz, Spain, December 30, 1815. Graduated at West Point 1835. Became a civil engineer, but re-entered United States army in 1842. Served on staffs of Scott and Taylor during the Mexican war. Entered the Civil war in command of a brigade, and soon commanded a division. Led his division through the Seven Days' battle on the Peninsula, being severely wounded at Glendale. Fought at Antietam, and distinguished himself at Fredericksburg. Commanded the fifth corps at Chancellorsville. Succeeded Hooker in command of the entire army, while it was marching to check Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania. Fought the battle of Gettysburg, compelling Lee to retreat across the Potomac. When Grant assumed general command in 1864, he retained Meade in his command of the Army of the Potomac, and he led his forces through all the batteries from Wilderness to Petersburg, and in all the operations which led to the surrender of Lee. He attained the rank of major-general in the regular army, and commanded the military division of the Atlantic until his death at Philadelphia November 6, 1872. MARMADUKE, GEN. JOHN S., born in Missouri March 14, 1833. Graduated at West Point in 1857. Served in Utah and New Mexico. Entered Confederate service as colonel of 3d Infantry. Wounded at Shiloh. Operated in Arkansas and Mississippi against General Banks. Promoted to major-general. Captured in Missouri and prisoner of war till August, 1865. In 1873 became secretary of Missouri State Board of Agriculture. Appointed Railroad Commissioner 1875. Elected governor of Missouri 1884. Died December 28, 1887.
