KILPATRICK, GEN. HUGH JUDSON, born near Dockertown, N.J., January 14, 1836. Graduated at West Point 1861. Appointed captain of volunteers May 9, 1861. Promoted to first lieutenant in regular army May 14, 1861. Wounded in battle of Big Bethel August, 1861. Made lieutenant-colonel of a cavalry regiment. In January, 1862, went to Kansas as chief of artillery under General Lane. Rejoined his regiment in Virginia, fought several cavalry battles, and participated in second Bull Run. Promoted to brigadier of volunteers, and fought at Gettysburg. Brevetted lieutenant-colonel in regular army. Led many famous raids toward Richmond. Participated in Sherman's campaign from Chattanooga to Atlanta, and wounded at Resaca. Brevetted colonel for bravery at Resaca. Promoted to captain of artillery in regular army November 30, 1864. Captured Fayetteville, N.C., and brevetted major-general of volunteers. Resigned his commission in 1867. Minister to Chile 1865-68. Reappointed minister to Chile, 1881. Died in Valparaiso December 4, 1881. KEYES, GEN. ERAMUS DARWIN, born in Massachusetts May 29, 1810. Graduated at West Point 1832. Served on frontier, in garrison duty, and as instructor at West Point. Made major-general 1858. Served with distinction in Union army, throughout the Civil war, and was brevetted brigadier-general in regular army, but resigned 1864, to enter business in California. KELLEY, GEN. BENJAMIN F., born in New Hampshire April 10, 1807. Entered the volunteer army as colonel from Virginia, and was several times wounded in action. Commanded in West Virginia in 1863. Brevetted major-general March, 1865. After close of war he held various federal offices.
