    3. McCLELLAN, GEN. GEORGE BRINTON, born at Philadelphia, Pa., December 3, 1826. Graduated at West Point 1846. Served through the Mexican war, and attained rank of brevet captain. Made full captain 1855. Resigned 1857, and became President of Illinois Central Railroad. At outbreak of Civil war, took command of Ohio volunteers, with rank of major-general, and soon given same command in United States army. Took command in western Virginia, whence he expelled the Confederates after the battle of Rich Mountain. After the collapse of the Manassas campaign, he was given command of the Army of the Potomac, and when General Scott retired, he became commander of all the armies. In March, 1862, his command was again reduced to the Army of the Potomac. Organized his new army in winter of 1862-63, and entered upon the disastrous Peninsula campaign. By September, 1862, he was back in Washington, reorganizing his shattered armies. Marched them through Maryland to repel Lee's invasion September 2-17, 1862. Fought the battles of South Mountain and Antietam, forcing Lee to retreat across the Potomac. Removed November 7, 1862, for failure to pursue Lee, and succeeded by Burnside. Nominated for the Presidency in 1864, on "The war is a failure" platform, and defeated. Retired to the business of civil engineer. Elected Governor of New Jersey in 1877, for the term 1878-81. died at Orange Mountain, N.J., October 29, 1888. LYON, GEN. NATHANIEL, born in Ashford, Conn., July 14, 1818. Graduated at West Point 1841. Served in Seminole war and through Mexican war. Wounded at Mexico, and brevetted captain. Assigned to California, and promoted to captain 1851. On duty in Kansas in 1859. Ordered to St. Louis February, 1861, where he organized the Union forces. Made brigadier-general of volunteers June, 1861. Dispersed Confederate forces at Potosi, and on June 17 defeated Governor Jackson's State militia. On August 2 defeated McCullough at Dry Springs. Defeated at Wilson's Creek by Price and McCullough, and killed in that battle August 10, 1861. LONGSTREET, GEN. JAMES, born in South Carolina January 8, 1821. Graduated at West Point, 1842. Fought through the Mexican war, and was wounded. Attained rank of captain. Paymaster in United States army till 1858. Resigned to enter Confederate army June 1, 1861. In command of 4th brigade of 1st corps at battle of Bull Run. Made major-general in 1862. Won distinction under Lee in the campaigns against McClellan, Pope, Burnside, and Meade. After Fredericksburg December 13, 1862, promoted to a corps command with rank of lieutenant-general. Conspicuous in battle of Gettysburg July 1-3, 1863, and in Wilderness May 1-6, 1864, where he was wounded. Prominent in the siege operations at Petersburg. Surrendered with Lee April, 1865. Moved to New Orleans where he was made Collector of Port by President Grant. Moved to Georgia in 1875. Sent as minister to Turkey in 1880. Subsequently U.S. Marshal of Northern District of Georgia. Married in 1897. Appointed U. S. Railway Commissioner in 1897, by President McKinley.
