    1. MILLS of NY & NJ

    3. Seek information on any MILLS family in Essex or Union Cos., NJ. Let me share what I know about my family of MILLS. First, they are said to have come from Jamaica, Long Island, NY. Numerous families are found in Elizabethtown & Westfield. The first MILLS whom I believe I connect to was Wm. MILLS #1 who married Amy (????). He died intestate in 1795 at 72y in Essex Co., NJ. The administrators of his estate were Jeremiah & Wm. MILLS (#2) who I believe were his sons. (I could be wrong.) When Amy died by 20 May 1799 she had written a will naming her daughters & some grandchildren: Betsey ROLL & gs/Aaron ROLL; Amy BAKER & gs/ Jonathan BAKER; Mary "Polly" WOODRUFF & gchildren (by Benj. STITES) John & Polly STITES; Nancy MARSH & gs/James MARSH; Hannah FRAZEE & gs/Samuel FRAZEE. I believe her sons inherited from their father's administration of estate & she wanted her daughters to inherit this time. Jeremiah had married 1766 Scotch Plains, NJ to Elizabeth MARSH; William (#2) married a Rebecca (???) Secondly: William MILLS (#2) married Rebecca (???) & died having will probated 21 Aug 1815 naming: Wm. (#3); Philemon Elmer; and Amy. There may have been others, but they were not named in the will. They did have a Nancy who d 1792. I do not know what happened to Rebecca. Now, I have found Wm. MILLS (#3) as William W. MILLS, so I have a strong belief that he was William Winans MILLS b ca 1790. Possibly his mother's or gmother's maiden name was WINANS. A grandson of Wm. (#3) was named Nicholas Winans/Wynants MILLS. William (#3) mar 1810 Scotch Plains Bapt. Church, Scotch Plains, NJ to Elizabeth "Betsey" CLARK. I do not know who Elizabeth's parents were. This family went to Hamilton Co., OH; Warren Co., OH; Miami Co., OH; & Shelby Co., OH where Elizabeth died. William (#3) remarried to Joanna FLINN & he died in Piqua, Miami Co., OH. The known children of Wm. (#3) & Elizabeth were: Halstead Cole/Coe MILLS; Dennis C. MILLS; Philemon Elmer MILLS; Joanna MILLS; supposedly 7 in all, of which I know only of the 4 mentioned. For additional info: Philemon Elmer MILLS, s/o Wm. & Rebecca, married Phebe STEWART; Amy MILLS dau/o Wm. & Rebecca mar Thomas HEATH. Now, for some other connections: On map "The Olde Towne" = Westfield, Westfield Twp., Essex/Union Co., NJ of 1740-1800 one of the Wm. MILLS lives on Springfield Road and on a crossroad to this live Samuel MILLS & John MILLS. How these men are related to all my Williames, I do not know. What makes this family more enticing to find and connect is the fact that I am doubly descended from Wm. & Amy. On my father's side I descend from a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsey" MILLS who married Jacob ROLL. On my mother's side I'm descended from the son, Wm. MILLS (#2), & his line that came to OH. Something of further interest is the fact that there were WINANS in Shelby Co., OH & in fact one Nicholas WYNANT. Philemon Elmer MILLS, s/o Wm. & Rebecca, laid out the town of Sharonville, Hamilton Co., OH. Now, I know there was another (Rev.) Wm. MILLS who married Mary READING & lived in Elizabethtown, Essex Co., NJ, & also from the MILLS family of Long Island, NY. He was a contemporary of my Wm. MILLSes. Secondly, they had a son, John Reading MILLS who traveled with Benj. STITES into the OH Valley & settled in Hamilton Co., OH. They had another son, Isaac MILLS, who laid out Elizabethtown, Hamilton Co., OH. I would love to converse with others working on their MILLS ancestry from these common places mentioned above. Any help or tidbit would be greatly appreciated. Audrey Shields Hancock
