In a message dated 98-01-27 19:51:21 EST, you write: << How is it that one becomes an enumerator? What's it entail? I'm intrigued! >> During the 1990 census, the Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census started in 1988 with creating the maps of dwelling within urban areas- actually within incorporated towns. This was simply a verfication process for the mail-in census forms. Enumerators were given districts and maps and notebooks for writing in addresses and went around simply copying adddresses and making dots on maps. During 1989, enumerators were sent out to the rural areas to create maps and gather mailing addresses. After April 1, 1990 (which was Census Day) enumerators were sent to those dwelling which had not answered the census to ask the questions and take down the answers. At that time, we were told that the 2000 census would be set up differently since the entire nation was supposedly going to do away with route and box numbers by 1995 or 1996. Those of you who still have route box numbers know that this project is not yet finished. To date, I have not seen anything to indicate whether they will start again this year or not. There are 2 basic ways that a person can get to be an enumerator- 1) being asked by a relatively influential member of a political party- although this sounds good it is the least good way to go because often these people are not as good workers as those who took it upon themselves to get the job 2- watch your local newspaper for classified ads for enumerators 3) Check with your local Job service. There is training for a couple of days (for which you are paid). Then you are assigned to a sort of team leader who is answerable to the Field Operations Supervisor (which is what I was in 1990 after being an enumerator in 1989). If you working outside of towns, you drive over everything that looks like a road in your assigned district and walk what you can't drive. It is strenuous, tiresome, and often hot or muddy or cold work, but it one of the most enlightening things you can do. The pay isn't bad and the mileage pay is pretty good- but you can't be overly timid or easily frightened by your surroundings and you should have a good substantial vehicle because if you out in the "boonies" it will get beaten half to death. Still, in all, I would and do heartily recommend it and hope to be able to work the 2000. Mary

My two cents- as a former (and hopefully future) census taker- As a former Field Operations supervisor for the 1990 Decennial Census, I can tell you that census information is only as good as the person giving it. Chances are in today's world, if one of the adults in the family fills out the mail-in form, the information will be basically correct, assuming that the person fills it out honestly. However, when census information is gained by knocking on doors- as it always was way back when and is still for those who do not send their forms in, there is a tremendous margin for some error on some of the data. For example, a child may or may not know the ages or birthplaces of his/her parents- even a teenage child. They may guess. People may give nicknames or strange pronunciations for names. Today enumerators are told to ask each name to be spelled- regardless of how simple the name is- there are so many variations- Ann or Anne, Jane or Jayne, Smith or Smythor Smythe, etc...However, if a person says "Barbary" and means "Barbara" or "Ivy" and means "Iva" and is not asked to spell it- or cannot spell it, the enumerator wrote down what he/she heard. Another thing to remember- there were really not many spelling conventions until late in the 19th century- and enumerators were more literate than most folks, but not necessarily what we would call literate. By the way, if you have the opportunity to become an enumerator for the 2000 census, you should considerr taking it. It isn't easy, but it is some of the most interesting stuff I have ever done! (It is also extremely hard on your car if you live in any kind of rural type area!) Mary

Seek information on any MILLS family in Essex or Union Cos., NJ. Let me share what I know about my family of MILLS. First, they are said to have come from Jamaica, Long Island, NY. Numerous families are found in Elizabethtown & Westfield. The first MILLS whom I believe I connect to was Wm. MILLS #1 who married Amy (????). He died intestate in 1795 at 72y in Essex Co., NJ. The administrators of his estate were Jeremiah & Wm. MILLS (#2) who I believe were his sons. (I could be wrong.) When Amy died by 20 May 1799 she had written a will naming her daughters & some grandchildren: Betsey ROLL & gs/Aaron ROLL; Amy BAKER & gs/ Jonathan BAKER; Mary "Polly" WOODRUFF & gchildren (by Benj. STITES) John & Polly STITES; Nancy MARSH & gs/James MARSH; Hannah FRAZEE & gs/Samuel FRAZEE. I believe her sons inherited from their father's administration of estate & she wanted her daughters to inherit this time. Jeremiah had married 1766 Scotch Plains, NJ to Elizabeth MARSH; William (#2) married a Rebecca (???) Secondly: William MILLS (#2) married Rebecca (???) & died having will probated 21 Aug 1815 naming: Wm. (#3); Philemon Elmer; and Amy. There may have been others, but they were not named in the will. They did have a Nancy who d 1792. I do not know what happened to Rebecca. Now, I have found Wm. MILLS (#3) as William W. MILLS, so I have a strong belief that he was William Winans MILLS b ca 1790. Possibly his mother's or gmother's maiden name was WINANS. A grandson of Wm. (#3) was named Nicholas Winans/Wynants MILLS. William (#3) mar 1810 Scotch Plains Bapt. Church, Scotch Plains, NJ to Elizabeth "Betsey" CLARK. I do not know who Elizabeth's parents were. This family went to Hamilton Co., OH; Warren Co., OH; Miami Co., OH; & Shelby Co., OH where Elizabeth died. William (#3) remarried to Joanna FLINN & he died in Piqua, Miami Co., OH. The known children of Wm. (#3) & Elizabeth were: Halstead Cole/Coe MILLS; Dennis C. MILLS; Philemon Elmer MILLS; Joanna MILLS; supposedly 7 in all, of which I know only of the 4 mentioned. For additional info: Philemon Elmer MILLS, s/o Wm. & Rebecca, married Phebe STEWART; Amy MILLS dau/o Wm. & Rebecca mar Thomas HEATH. Now, for some other connections: On map "The Olde Towne" = Westfield, Westfield Twp., Essex/Union Co., NJ of 1740-1800 one of the Wm. MILLS lives on Springfield Road and on a crossroad to this live Samuel MILLS & John MILLS. How these men are related to all my Williames, I do not know. What makes this family more enticing to find and connect is the fact that I am doubly descended from Wm. & Amy. On my father's side I descend from a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsey" MILLS who married Jacob ROLL. On my mother's side I'm descended from the son, Wm. MILLS (#2), & his line that came to OH. Something of further interest is the fact that there were WINANS in Shelby Co., OH & in fact one Nicholas WYNANT. Philemon Elmer MILLS, s/o Wm. & Rebecca, laid out the town of Sharonville, Hamilton Co., OH. Now, I know there was another (Rev.) Wm. MILLS who married Mary READING & lived in Elizabethtown, Essex Co., NJ, & also from the MILLS family of Long Island, NY. He was a contemporary of my Wm. MILLSes. Secondly, they had a son, John Reading MILLS who traveled with Benj. STITES into the OH Valley & settled in Hamilton Co., OH. They had another son, Isaac MILLS, who laid out Elizabethtown, Hamilton Co., OH. I would love to converse with others working on their MILLS ancestry from these common places mentioned above. Any help or tidbit would be greatly appreciated. Audrey Shields Hancock
