Hi, I am sorry, but I do not have my Pack line brought down into the 1900's. My Earls line connects with the Pack line in the middle 1800's, so I am working my way back from there. I know there are still a few Pack families in this area - Tazewell County, Virginia, but I don't have any of their lines. Maybe I can be of help when you get further back. Will be glad to share. There were only two blind homes that I know of and one of them was on 17th and Forrest Avenue in Nashville and there was another one Cloverbottom School of the Blind that is in Donelson, TN. There might be some records located at the TN State Archives and Library in Nashville. They have a website. I am researchin the following surnames: DARRAH, FERGUSON, FAUSSET, KING, GRAHAM, REED, STOOPS, WHITAKER, LANE, WALLACE, VENABLE, HAINES, WRIGHT AND BYERS.
I believe there are books which discuss the Trail of Tears in detail and there may be microfilm in the National Archives with tribal lists. It wouldn't hurt to check the NARA web site to see. Good luck.
Jenny, I am trying to reseach the Tolbert name, and I have just started this task this weekend. Do you have connections to relatives here in Mississippi? I appreciate your help. Tracie Grashoprr@aol.com
"THE TRAIL OF TEARS" 1838 missouri, December the forced removal of the Cherokees, mainly from Georgia, to the Indian Territory west of the Missisippi, was about to be completed. the removal process bagan October 1, and is expected to be concluded in early spring. The United States Army is conducting the transfer operation under General Winfield Scott. the forced removal policy has been roundly denounced by most humanists and constitunial experts. while the supreme court has exxentially ruled that the indians had the leagal right to remain at their ancestral homes in georgia. preaident jackson did not feel that way, after hearing formal chief justice john marshalls verdict , he reputedly said. "He has made his decision, now let him enforce it. whereupon jackson ordered the army to move the indians out of georgia. Reliable witnesses say that as many as 18,000 indaians are being sent through the summer heat, droughts and winter snows to the indian country. they also say that many of the indians are dying of starvation, heat-induced siseases and exposure from the cold. an epidemic of small poz is also reporetedly decimating thir ranks. general scott has announced that he intends to conduct this operation with as little bloodshed and hardship as possible. the indians howerer, have already temed this long journey "THE TRAIL O F TEARS" the cherokees were herded into 645 wagons and are being guarded by soilders at bayonet point. at the moment they are crossing Missouri on their way west. this was taken from the Chronicle of America,
You might try the Chamber of Commerce for Tahlequah, Ok. My brother lives there and they put on the Trail of Tears play every year I think.
I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHERE TO FIND THE NAMES OF PEOPLE WHO TRAVELED THE TRAIL OF TEARS, TOO. MY GGGM WAS CHEROKEE DURING, AND I'M HAVING A TOUGH TIME TRACING HER PARENTS. THANKS!
