Promoted to captain 1861, Entered Union army, and appointed lieutenant-colonel, November 12, 1861. Promoted to major-general of volunteers, October 8, 1862. Attached to Grant's staff and served at Forts Henry and Donelson, and at Shiloh and Corinth. Promoted to command of a division Bolivar, Tenn., and in 1862 - 63, co-operated with Grant's movements. Led a corps in battle of Fort Gibson. Routed part of Johnston's army at Raymond May 12, 1863. Aided Grant in the battle of Champion Hills, and the siege of Vicksburg. Made brigadier-general in regular army August 1, 1863. In 1864, advanced to command of Army of the Tennessee, and conducted important operations around Huntsville, Ala. Commanded Sherman's left during the Atlanta campaign. Was killed before Atlanta July 22, 1864. McDOWELL, GEN. IRWIN, born at Columbus, Ohio. October 15, 1818. Graduated at West Point in 1838. Remained as instructor of mathematics till 1845. At breaking out of Civil war, made a brigadier and placed in command of the Federal troops at Washington. In command of Union army when defeated at Bull Run July 21, 1861. McClellan took command, and McDowell was again placed in charge at Washington. Major-general of volunteers March 14, 1862, and commander of Department of Rappahannock April 14, 1862. Took distinguished part in the battles during Pope's campaign, but relieved of his command September 5, 1862. President board of retiring officers 1863 - 64. In command of Department of Pacific July, 1864, to June, 1865. Made a major-general in 1872, and held command in the various departments, till retired in 1882. Died in San Francisco May 4, 1885. McCULLOCH, GEN. BEN, born in Rutherford county, Tenn., November 11, 1811. Fought with General Houston in Texas, and participated at St. Jacinto. Elected to Texas legislature and made major-general of State militia. A distinguished member of the Texas Rangers in the Mexican war. Resided in California 1849 - 52. Returned to Texas and made U. S. Marshal. Joined Confederate army and made brigadier-general May 14, 1861. Joined his forces to those of Price and the defeated Generals Lyons and Sigel at Wilson's Creek. Led his division at Pea Ridge, where he was killed March 8, 1862.

    3. MEADE, GEN. GEORGE GORDON, born of American parents in Cadiz, Spain, December 30, 1815. Graduated at West Point 1835. Became a civil engineer, but re-entered United States army in 1842. Served on staffs of Scott and Taylor during the Mexican war. Entered the Civil war in command of a brigade, and soon commanded a division. Led his division through the Seven Days' battle on the Peninsula, being severely wounded at Glendale. Fought at Antietam and distinguished himself at Fredericksburg. Commanded the fifth corps at Chancellorsville. Succeeded Hooker in command of the entire army, while it was marching to check Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania. Fought the battle of Gettysburg, compelling Lee to retreat across the Potomac. When Grant assumed general command in 1864, he retained Meade in his command of the Army of the Potomac, and he led his forces through all the battles from Wilderness to Petersburg, and in all the operations which led to the surrender of Lee. He attained the rank of major-general in the regular army, and commanded the military division of the Atlantic until his death at Philadelphia November 6, 1872. MARMADUKE, GEN. JOHN S., born in Missouri March 14, 1833. Graduated at West Point in 1857. Served in Utah and New Mexico. Entered Confederate service as colonel of 3d Infantry. Wounded at Shiloh. Operated in Arkansas and Mississippi against General Banks. Promoted to major-general. Captured in Missouri and prisoner of war till august, 1865. In 1873 became secretary of Missouri State Board of Agriculture. Appointed Railroad Commissioner 1875. Elected governor of Missouri 1884. Died December 28, 1887. MAGRUDER, GEN. JOHN B., born in Winchester, Va., August 15, 1810. Graduated at West Point in 1830. Served through Mexican war, and brevetted lieutenant-colonel for gallant service at Chapultepec, where he was wounded. Entered Confederate service and won the battle of Big Bethel. Made brigadier-general. Held the Union forces in check at Yorktown, participated in the battle of Melvern Hills, and promoted major-general. Given command of Department of Texas, October 1862, and captured Galveston January 1, 1863. Entered Maxmillan's army in Mexico. Returned to Texas and lived in retirement. Died February, 1871.
