In a message dated 99-11-13 10:29:33 EST, you write: << Has anyone come across any Roll/Rolle family from the Alsace-Lorraine region who were say French and JEWISH. I just had a second cousin call me this week and inform me that he got documents that show our Roll/Rolle Julianne Christina Roll/Rolle Schreiner was French Jew. This was news to everyone in the family. It was something we NEVER knew. Andrea (Schreiner) Heslin Columbus, Ohio acheslin@msn.com >> Hello Andrea, I have been told, by members of my father's Jewish family (ROLL) that their surname comes from the name Mannel or Mangle; that the family originated in Spain; that they emigrated (1492) to Holland and, later, to Germany, France, and eastern Europe; that various members of the family took on other (ie. Christian) faiths due to intermarriage or societal pressures; that many ROLLs are, in fact, descended from this Spanish/Dutch, Jewish family. I was in touch with another ROLL some months ago. Sorry I don't remember the woman's name, but she did speak of her family in Alsace-Lorraine. When I asked her about a possible Jewish component, indicating that my own background contained such, she quickly revealed that she had long suspected that certain of her ancestors were, in fact, Jewish, though she was Christian. Probably, by the time you read this, you will have received other e-mail with a lot more specific information than I have supplied. There are probably many on this list who would like to share that information with you. Good luck, Eric Roll bjolla@aol.com
