Martha It's interesting that the first Roll child in the Hughes Roll family was named Clement Valladingham, apparently they admired the real C.V. quite a bit to name their first child after him. I don't know how much you know about this gentleman, but since Dayton, Ohio (my howetown) was his base of operations I'm quite familiar with him. A lawyer he was a leading light in the western movement known as the "copperheads" during the Civil War. Not really related to the snake, these folks would cut the head from a copper penny and wear the "copperhead" as jewelry so like-minded people would recognize them. The copperheads belived that the war was a useless exercise in futility and wanted to sue the south for peace and allow them to go their own way. Valladingham was a leader in the copperhead movement and at one time the leading contender for the governorship of Ohio until General Ambrose Burnside showed up with a body of troops in Dayton and drug him from his home and arrested him. He was eventually exiled and sent across the lines to the south. Naming a child after this rabble-rouser suggests this branch of the Roll family were not very enthusiastic supporters of the Union war effort. Ed
