    1. [ROLL-L] John Roll in "History of Chatham, NJ"
    2. Dear Roll List Members, I was sent the following interesting item about John Roll, probably the son of Jan Mangles Roll (see identification in my reply at the bottom). I thought some would be interested. Anyone have ~positive~ documentation as to the burial place of Jan Mangles Roll (1708-1782)? I notice some have Jan's burial at Presbyterian Church, Long Hill, Chatham, Morris, NJ, and others have Long Hill Chapel. Are they the same place? What is the source? ==begin quote form Connie== From: RONCONLAF@aol.com Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 23:50:44 EDT Subject: Re: [NJMORRIS-L] Re: History of Chatham, NJ To: wroll@redrivernet.com Hi William, Thank you very much for writing. I found a reference to your John Roll on page 123 of "History of Chatham, NJ" Page 121 has a letter from General Heard to Colonel Holmes, Monmouth County, Rocky Hill 12th April, 1779. Then, on page 122 there's a note which appears to be a P. S to the letter, but rather than P. S. it says N. B: "N. B. I am surprised that you have not sent me Returns of the state of your Regt I beg you will send me word by Express as Soon as the Beacons are Erected. Then, on page 123, in a footnote, your John Roll is mentioned as building a beacon. I would assume it's one of the beacons mentioned in the communication. "Item 11-The Laws of 1780, Chapter LVII, provided for the payment to Colonel Sylvanus Seeley the sum of 56 pounds, 8 shillings and 9 pence: paid to JOHN ROLL for building a beacon on Long Hill, and for six cords of wood." Interesting piece of history about your ancestor, isn't it? Do you have knowledge of the burial ground of John? I'm thinking there may be many of these early settlers in the same ground at Chatham. Hope your Monday is good. Connie ==end quote from Connie== ==begin quote from W. H. Roll== Dear Connie, Yes. Thanks for the nice bit of information about John Roll (1732-1808), son of Jan Mangles Roll (1708-1782). I had not seen this. I ordered the book today, as there seem to be several available for about $10. Jan Mangles Roll, who born on Staten Island and lived at Turkey, (now New Providence,) New Jersey, was buried either at the Long Hill Chapel grounds or in Chatham Presbyterian burial ground. I have seen neither source myself, so its up for grabs. I don't know why he would be buried in Chatham, unless it was connected to the Revolution, still in progress at the time. Both Jan and his son John were soldiers. Jan was a rather old for that, but is said to have trained troops. I descend from Jan's son Isaac Roll, who ran a tavern and stage line stop in Springfield, New Jersey. John Roll, Jan's son and an uncle of mine, lived in Springfield, Union, (then Essex County,) New Jersey, and later moved to Ohio. He is buried at the Old Cemetery, South Cumminsville, OH. Others on the Roll-L list at RootsWeb would be interested in this. May I post your message to that list? ==end quote from W. H. Roll==
