Just a note. Thank you, Jan, for your additional information. The name is definitely "Sylvender" and was most common in that small section of the state of OH. Where it came from, is something I have been searching for years or what the significance was, I just don't know, but I have accumulated surnames of those in that era and in Butler Co., OH who appear to have Sylvender as a given name. Yes, you are correct...in that the name is also given as Sylvander and Sylvester and Silvender. My hubby's ancestor was found with all those variants, also. However, "Sylvender" appears to be the name...and we know how records can mutilate one's given name and one's surname. I thought possibly there was a minister by that name, just as Lorenzo Dow became the given name of many in those early years...but nothing. In the ROSS Family of NJ by Robert L. ROSS there is a Sylvender ROSS who is interelated to the HANCOCK family of Butler Co., OH, and his family were in Butler Co., OH along with the others with the same name.
