    1. [ROLL-L] GASTON-L, new mail list
    2. William Henry Roll
    3. Dear List Members, Isaac Roll (1735-1809), son of John Mangles Roll and Elizabeth Strickhauser, married (1764) Sarah Cauldwell (1738-1804). Sarah's parents were James Cauldwell (1690- ) and Mary GASTON (1695- ). So the GASTONs are ancestors of all who descended from Isaac and Sarah. There are many very old family legends concerning the origins of the GASTON line, some rather surprising. Jean GASTON, supposed ancestor of Mary GASTON, was likely born in France during the reign of Henry IV, who was originally a Huguenot and then a Roman Catholic. Henry was born at Foix, now in France. Jean, to whom some attribute the surname De Foix, was probably a Huguenot as well, having fled from religious persecution to Scotland about the middle of the 17th century. During that time, there was a great religious persecution in Scotland. So Jean's sons, and probably daughters, went to Antrim, Northern Ireland, and some of their descendants emigrated to America. The new surname mail list GASTON-L@rootsweb.com is now open for business. As with all new lists, things are not very active until the existence of the list becomes known. So, if you subscribe, hang around for a while until the list gets active. There are a lot of GASTON researchers out there, and it will take time for them to discover the list. If you are a GASTON descendant, please broadcast news about this new list to anyone you believe may be interested. You may forward this message to save some writing. I believe that I am the owner of the list, although this has not yet been confirmed. You may subscribe to either of two modes: 1. To subscribe so as to receive every message posted to the list separately, send the word subscribe in an email message to GASTON-L-request@rootsweb.com. 2. To subscribe so as to receive several postings combined as a single large message or digest, send the word subscribe in an email message to GASTON-D-request@rootsweb.com. Additional instructions will be emailed to you when you subscribe. 3. You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Send the postings to GASTON-L@rootsweb.com. 1. [ROLL-L] John Roll in "History of Chatham, NJ"
    2. Dear Roll List Members, I was sent the following interesting item about John Roll, probably the son of Jan Mangles Roll (see identification in my reply at the bottom). I thought some would be interested. Anyone have ~positive~ documentation as to the burial place of Jan Mangles Roll (1708-1782)? I notice some have Jan's burial at Presbyterian Church, Long Hill, Chatham, Morris, NJ, and others have Long Hill Chapel. Are they the same place? What is the source? ==begin quote form Connie== From: RONCONLAF@aol.com Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 23:50:44 EDT Subject: Re: [NJMORRIS-L] Re: History of Chatham, NJ To: wroll@redrivernet.com Hi William, Thank you very much for writing. I found a reference to your John Roll on page 123 of "History of Chatham, NJ" Page 121 has a letter from General Heard to Colonel Holmes, Monmouth County, Rocky Hill 12th April, 1779. Then, on page 122 there's a note which appears to be a P. S to the letter, but rather than P. S. it says N. B: "N. B. I am surprised that you have not sent me Returns of the state of your Regt I beg you will send me word by Express as Soon as the Beacons are Erected. Then, on page 123, in a footnote, your John Roll is mentioned as building a beacon. I would assume it's one of the beacons mentioned in the communication. "Item 11-The Laws of 1780, Chapter LVII, provided for the payment to Colonel Sylvanus Seeley the sum of 56 pounds, 8 shillings and 9 pence: paid to JOHN ROLL for building a beacon on Long Hill, and for six cords of wood." Interesting piece of history about your ancestor, isn't it? Do you have knowledge of the burial ground of John? I'm thinking there may be many of these early settlers in the same ground at Chatham. Hope your Monday is good. Connie ==end quote from Connie== ==begin quote from W. H. Roll== Dear Connie, Yes. Thanks for the nice bit of information about John Roll (1732-1808), son of Jan Mangles Roll (1708-1782). I had not seen this. I ordered the book today, as there seem to be several available for about $10. Jan Mangles Roll, who born on Staten Island and lived at Turkey, (now New Providence,) New Jersey, was buried either at the Long Hill Chapel grounds or in Chatham Presbyterian burial ground. I have seen neither source myself, so its up for grabs. I don't know why he would be buried in Chatham, unless it was connected to the Revolution, still in progress at the time. Both Jan and his son John were soldiers. Jan was a rather old for that, but is said to have trained troops. I descend from Jan's son Isaac Roll, who ran a tavern and stage line stop in Springfield, New Jersey. John Roll, Jan's son and an uncle of mine, lived in Springfield, Union, (then Essex County,) New Jersey, and later moved to Ohio. He is buried at the Old Cemetery, South Cumminsville, OH. Others on the Roll-L list at RootsWeb would be interested in this. May I post your message to that list? ==end quote from W. H. Roll==

    3. Hello, Jan, Well, I have been discussing the ancestry of my Joseph DUNHAM who married Mary "Polly" MILLER with DUNHAM researchers on the DUNHAM-DONHAM list. I am told that Joseph's father appears to be a Moses DUNHAM, but it is not etched in gold yet. His mother is unknown. I will see if I can discover any additional information on any of these families. It appears that there were 3 or 4 different DUNHAM lines who were in the same NJ area, and as with the ROLL family, many bore the same given name and many were born or died at similar times. I am descended from Ross DUNHAM & Sarah "Sally" ROLL via my father's side of the family, thus I am a MILLS descendant also. I am descended from the MILLS from both my father's side then and also via my mother's side. Well, let me see what more I can discover. Will let you know when I do. Wish I could solve who the parents of Joseph DUNHAM are. 3. For those who are not aware that the NY G & B (NEW YORK GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY has a quarterly publication THE RECORD. The first two 'RECORD'S' for 1999 will have an article about the Van Woggelum family. The first one is already published. I checked my local Genealogical Society this week and the second RECORD has not arrived yet. The local library is closing the Genealogical room for remodeling and it will be closed for almost a year. I thought someone on list wrote that we can buy copies of the only the article from the NY G & B. This might be our solution. By the way the 3rd and 4th articles are about the NY/NJ Roll's.
