Emma, I understand about wanting to be sure about Ancestry. I do also. I don't have a death date for Sarah Gary. A death certificate might give her parents names. Since we have the last address for George Roll, it was likely her last address also. I don't even know if you can get a Death Certificate with just the name and address. There were so many Sarah Roll's that it would have to be by the address to be sure of the person. If you find anything that the name should be Cary instead of Gary, I would appreciate you letting me know so it can be changed. I want the maiden names to be correct. It is not unusual for a child to marry back into the family. They could be distant cousins. Families were close back then even the distant families. Most of us remember the Catherine Roll/James Ayres situation. Some of us worked on it for years before we learned that it was two different James Ayres and Catherine Roll. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Martha __________________________________________________ FREE Email for ALL! Sign up at http://www.mail.com
James Whallon Roll was in the 1900 Allen Co., KS. Census. Martha __________________________________________________ FREE Email for ALL! Sign up at http://www.mail.com
Hi Barbara, I lost you again for awhile. Glad you joined the group. I think the pronunciation was the main cause for name changing about that time. When I first met Lynn, she had gone to school in Roll, Indiana (pronounced Rall) as a young girl. She commented several times to mispronounce her name was fighting words. Lynn's ancestor Matthias Roll is the person the town is named for. We use the Roll pronunciation. The family lived around Marion, Indiana since the mid 1900's. Anywhere I went, within about 100 mile radius, they pronounced my name Rall. Some seemed to be very strict with the pronunciation and some just let it go. Martha, Thanks for the information. The pronuciation makes sense. Glad to know that my grandfather was not just an upstart. I haven't intended to have an alias, but that may have been the reason for the confusion. Eighteen months ago, I married so I changed from Hamilton to Peiffer ( I married my high school sweetheart) and moved from IL to AZ. Barbara Rall Hamilton Peiffer
Hi Barbara, My ROLL ancestor's changed their name to RALL while still in Ohio. Sometimes I wonder whether they were illiterate and had to have a 'clerk' write and spell their surname, might have had something to do with accents also. Of course in the 1800's they did not have to write their name very often and could have been forgetfulness. MY grgrgrandfather, Isaac Brooks Rall (1829 OH-1910 KS), son of Moses RALL (1797 NJ-1868 OH) , son of Jacob ROLL (1761 NJ- 1834 OH) married his first cousin Mary Jane Latourrette in Clark County Ohio in 1850, they were in Whitley County IN for the 1860 and 1870 Census, then they were in the 1900 census in Reno County KS. It is believed they were in Kansas before 1885 and family lore states they returned to IN sometime after the death of their daughter in 1885. At that time they took their youngest granddaughter (my grandmother) back to KS with them to raise. Isaac died in 1910 and Mary Jane in 1904, both are buried in the Plevna Cemetery in Reno County KS. I have not researched why so many moved to KS around that time, I just assumed that there was either a land give a way or inexpensive property. Seems like migration patterns developed over land. I think Ed's ancestor's changed their name from ROLL to RALL about the same time as mine, also in OH. Nancy Lohbrunner lohbrunner@prodigy.net
Martha, thanks alot for your help. I don't know if I'm being overly concerned, but I guess because I had several earlier emails telling me that ROLL/RALL was a pretty common name in the OHIO area that I'm particularly paranoid. Because I do know that the MILL CREEK connection does exist between the Roll's and the Cary's, and my husband's aunt said that as children George S. and Estelle (Cary) played together as their families had neighboring farms, it seems they are definitely the right family. Anyway, thanks again and I am very much appreciative of your efforts. Emma
My relative, James Whallon ROLL was born on Dec. 28, 1936 in Cincinnati to Samuel Vance ROLL and Nancy Ann Whallon ROLL. In the 1860's, he is found in Zanesville as a partner in business school. He married Susan WEATHERHEAD probably in the sixties, also. In the 1880 census, he is in Allen County, Kansas as a farmer and was in a boarding house. In the same census, Susan was in the home of William L. CHURCH, 46th Street, Hyde Park, Cook County, IL. She and the children joined him in KS later. I don't know why this connection to the CHURCH family, either.I am very interested in the why of these migrations. Does anyone else have a Roll ancestor that also has these movings, that parallels these travels? My theory is he may have gone with relatives or to relatives. I know that the Kansas move was probably for land, but I wonder if he went with other relatives. There were other ROLLS in Zanesville at the time, but I don't know how they are connected or if they are. James and Susan had four children born from 1868 to 1875. Susan died in Kansas in Colony, Anderson County, KS in 1909 and James in 1919. Their children were Samuel Albert b. 1868 who died in Illinois in 1911, Nannie Bessie who married Arthur PAINE Lillie Marie who married Earl RANEY and Robert E ROLL who was born in 1907 and died in Colony in 1907. Does anyone have any more information and/or connections to this family? An interesting note: Samuel Albert Roll/Rall was my grandfather. He changed his name from ROLL to RALL before 1900. Does anyone else have a relative who changed a name from Roll to Rall? Samuel Albert married Ethel Briggs in 1900 in La Grange, IL and they had two children, Robert Weatherhead RALL b 1906 (my dad who is now 92) and Jane Eileen RALL b. 1908. Thank you, ROLL people, for reading this and for your help. Barbara RALL Peiffer
Emma, The information that I sent earlier was added between 1992 and last year. Janis and I lost touch for awhile. I don't have anything more on George Stockton Roll. I think I sent P. 222 in to the list and if I did, it will be in the Archives. I need to check it to see what I have sent. I do know that this George Stockton Roll was the son of George Roll & Sarah Gary. There were two daughters, Margaret b. 1833 and Emeline b. 1839. The notation at the bottom of the page reads: George Roll was born in N.J. He married Sarah Gary in Butler Co., Ohio. He was in the 1850 Census in Hamilton Co., Ohio. Last residence was 512 W. Liberty Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. Died of Chronic Inflamation of Stomach. I wish I had been better at references but that was one thing I overlooked. I hope this helps. Janis, I meant to send the last one through the list and didn't. I checked the mail and I don't have it about Edna passing. Bill, When you get the genealogy ready again, would you please add Janis's name. We all did it together and she has all that we have and maybe more. I can only add a notation to what she has now and then for what I've picked up in the last few years and jotted down. Martha __________________________________________________ FREE Email for ALL! Welcome back!!! Great to hear from you !!!!!! Hope all is working now. We've really missed you! Did you get my message concerning Edna Roll's passing? Jan
Janis, Your letter of July 17 stating that you believe this was the George she was looking for is the right one. I have: George Stockton Roll b. Feb. 1836 d. Buried at Ft. Worth, TX Stockton, Feb., and Buried at Ft. Worth, TX is all in pen writing so I had failed to send this on to you. I am back online but different. A lot of trouble with the server and they are still not up yet but I have mail but not what I want. I'll give the address at the end. Computer up and down for a couple of months hasn't helped either. Classes are getting harder. Sorry I lost all that has been sent to Carrollnet.com but I can get it here temporarily. This should be in Hansel's stuff since it is on my page 222 and I believe he got it. Mother of George Stockton Roll, Sarah Gary was born in Vermont. That is also in pen writing. I didn't notice if it was in your information. My address temporarily is: therolls@usa.com Martha __________________________________________________ FREE Email for ALL! Sign up at http://www.mail.com
