    3. I am forwarding something that was posted on another list, some of you might have seen it already. I think it is of value to our research. Hope it helps someone. Nancy Good Morning everyone: I played hooky from work yesterday and spent the day at the NARA Branch in Atlanta and it jogged my memory to pass on some information to everyone. Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date. When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them - in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm difficult to say the least. The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserve all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task. So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918. And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had visited the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards, took one look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left. For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to: NARA Southeast Region 1557 St. Joseph Ave East Point, GA 30344 In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and the county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you copies. The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents for the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did all this wonderful hard work for you <VBG> If you have any other questions about the cards please write to me and I'll try to help. I've been "delving" into these cards for the past few years. But PLEASE don't ask me to get the copies for you. It is difficult for me to take the time off from work to visit the archive to do my own research <g>. And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on. 3. Dear Pamela, Congratulations on the birth of your twin sons. I really like their names; Daniel and Jacob are good ROLL/RALL names! I truly wish that when I had my sons that I would have used my surname as their middle names. Enjoy every second you spend with them for it is all too short. Best wishes, Nancy Lohbrunner lohbrunner@prodigy.net

    1. [ROLL] Swiss Rolls
    2. Hi Everyone! I have talked to Martha about the information I have on the Switzerland Roll Family that came to the US, and she suggested I put it on the mailing list. I don't know if anyone from this family is on the list, but I am hoping that I will be giving some information to someone that may be interested. For many years I have had the information that the family started with Matheis Roll and then his son, Samuel & Anna Baumann. I have searched for any records without any luck to document this. I did get some information from the LDS Church records that changes all of the information. I do not know which is the "true" information, so I would appreciate if there is anyone that can tell me if there is any documentation on the above names. This is what I have and I am certainly "open" for any help! For now I will give the information I have on Peter Roll on down. Freidrich Roll married Anna Rolle 1846 B: 3-19-1820 (Switzerland) D: 3-05-1904 (Iowa) Samuel Roll B: 3-9-1823 (Switzerland) D: 1906 (Switzerland) Peter Roll married Mary Elizabeth Wenger 1846 B: 9-3-1826 (Switzerland) B: 9-3-1822 D: 5-30-1920 (MO.) On their journey to Missouri, John and Ann Elizabeth Roll were born in the State of Ohio. Peter, Jr., Roland (Infant died), Mary Elizabeth and Louis Roll were born in the State of Illinois. They settled in Moniteau County, MO, approximately in 1867. Their native language was French. Peter became a citizen of the US on September 7, 1888. Peter lived to be 94 years old. 3. Dear Roll Researchers, GenConnect has established the Van Woggelum suite of surname boards at RootsWeb. Here are the URLs. Please remember that the URLs are case sensitive, that is all must be in lower case except the surname part which must be upper case. It is best to "copy", CONTROL-c, and "paste", CONTROL-v, to avoid errors in your bookmark entries. At the bottom of each of the seven boards is a place to request notification of each new post by email. 3. Clement Bishop was born about 1851 in Iowa. He married Sarah Abigail Roll in 1877. The couple is on the 1880 Mills Co., Iowa with a dau. Nellie Bishop born in 1878. A search of the cemetery books did not find this family. Did they move elsewhere? Were there more children? Thank you, Kathleen Rizer Hi Kathleen, 8th child of Warren Larue Roll & Malisa (Melissa) A. Askens. Abigail (Sarah) Roll b. 04/28/1857 d. 11/09/1919 Married: Clement Bishop M. 03/04/1877 1. Nellie Bishop b. ca 1878 Mills Co., Iowa I can't tell you if this family moved but probably did. Abigail's parents were in Cedar Twp., Monroe Co., Iowa for the Census in 1856, 1860, 1870. They were listed as being there for Zero number of years in 1856. Warren Larue Roll died at Palermo, Doniphan Co., Kansas in 1896. Some of the other children went to Kansas. This is Warren's line of the family. Is he still on the Roll-l list? 3. I've just assumed my forebears could spell better than everyone else's............ Seriously, I think it has more to do with pronunciation, although it's interesting that most of their tombstones use the different spellings we are familiar with for each individual - seems like it would be noticed by someone in the family if it were misspelled. 3. Martha, I'm fairly certain that the Gary is correct. I found other Gary's living in Butler County where George married Sarah. It is funny that George married someone named Gary and George S. married someone named Cary, but to the best of my knowledge, that is correct. Melvina Estelle Cary was the daughter of Freeman G. Cary and Melvina McCann of Hamilton County, Ohio and Freeman was a cousin of Alice and Phoebe Cary, the poetesses. I have obituaries for Freeman G. Cary, his father William Cary, George S. Rall and Estelle Cary Rall. Freeman G. Cary started a college in Cincinnati called first Cary Academy and then Farmer's College. Supposedly George S. Rall taught Latin at Farmer's College for a while. According to his obituary and his wife's they lived in Auglaize Cty. (Wapakoneta) for a number of years before they moved to Texas. Their second child according to census was born in Indiana so they must have moved there for a time and then back to Ohio, then to Texas. He ran a drug store in Wapakoneta. I'm not certain if he was a licensed pharmacist or just ran a drugstore. I know he had a patented face cream that he invented and sold around the country for quite some time. I have two books on the Cary family that were written in 1874 by Samuel Fenton Cary (Freeman G.'s brother) and one by Seth Cary from 1911. I haven't seen any reference to any Roll married to a Cary other than George S. to Estelle. I just wish they had told the name of George S.'s parents. That would have been nice! But then I wouldn't get to dig!!! Thanks alot! Emma
