Jan, I have added a little to the things below. I don't have much time so I can't go through the list of mail but I came across this and thought I would add what I could. John Roll was sergeant in Capt. Peter Leyton's company of Morris County, New Jersey militia. He was born in Germany, and, in 1782, his will was probated in Morris County, N. J. John Roll, Jr., was a private in the Morris County, New Jersey militia. He was born in Germany; died in Ohio. Abiah Preston (1760-1813) served as private and boatman, the latter service on frontier of Cumberland and Cape May. He was born in New Jersey; died in Hamilton County, Ohio. Solomon Aiken, in 1777, was a private in Capt. Edmund Hodges' company, Col. Josiah Whitcomb's regiment and later served as sergeant in Col. Job Cushing's Massachusetts regiment. He was born in Brookfield, Mass.; died in Barnard, Vt. Abraham Roll (1759-1827) a patriot, furnished material aid to the Continental army. He was born in New Jersey; died in Hamilton County, Ohio. Thomas Bacon (1726-1800) commanded a company which marched in the Lexington Alarm. He was born in Wrentham, Mass.; died in Vermont.

Frank and David, Thank you for sending the information on your family lines to the Roll list. Francis Sherman Roll came from what we on the list refer to as the Dutch line. (There are French, German and Swiss Roll/Rall, all spellings, researchers on the list.) When you have time, check out the url's in the tag lines at the bottom of each Roll message, most of them have the Dutch Rolls. (If anyone else has a web page, please let me know and I will put your url in a tag line.) We have data going back to Jan Mangels, also have information on Jan's wife and her family, the Van Woggelum's. David, I believe you mentioned an aunt did some research and also went back to Jan Mangels. I will post what I have at a later time and you can compare. We welcome corrections and additions. We do have a few differences that we cannot prove as yet, ie, the surname of the wife of John Roll (1708). We can prove his wife was named Elizabeth, but no one has further proof.
