    1. [ROLL] ALABAMA ROLLS
    2. jan davis
    3. Hi, I'm new to the list and genealogy. My ggrandfather, Swanston Theodore DAVIS b. 2/l7/l848 in Jackson co., MS married Sophronia Beaulah ROLLS b. 9/l3/l848 Mobile co., AL. Her sister, Emma ROLLS b. ca l854 mar. Don Durant DAVIS (brother to Swanston). Sophronia's father was William Hallett ROLLS b. 8/24/l824 Mobile, AL. and mar. Sarah TURNER. William Hallett's father was Jacob ROLLS and mother was Elizabeth L. ? born l2/l8/l795 NC. Jacob's family and origin elusive. As early as l830 census, Elizabeth was head of household. William inherited land from his mother, and purchased hundreds of other acres in the Grand Bay, Mobile co., AL area. He had slaves on his plantation, tutors for his children, and a seamstress came in to make the clothes for the family. Some of the original house was still standing along with the rebuilt portion from an earlier fire, in l978. The entrance drive is planted with live oak trees. William died 7/l3/l898 in Bayou La Batre, Mobile co., AL and Sarah died ll/2l/l904 in Mobile, Mobile co., AL. Both are buried in the family lot in the Grand Bay Cemetery. William and Sarah had nine children from l848 thru l869. I believe William Hallett may have had a brother, James A. ROLLS. Does anyone know this family? regards, jan davis-shannon

    3. I was checking all the James Roll's in my data base and found I had two with notes as possibly being married to Hetty Maria, she was born 6 Feb 1820 and died 8 Apr 1893. Their children were: Joseph Martin, Jane Delsena and Mary Emily. Can someone help me and tell me who the parents were of the James Roll who married a Hetty Maria? Thanks, Nancy Lohbrunner lohbrunner@prodigy.net

    3. Tom Roll on our list just returned from visiting his ROLL relatives in Dettwiller & Strasbourg, Bas Rhin, Alsace. Maybe when he gets caught up after being gone for so long he will post his experience to the list. Also hope he will be able to help some of the French researchers on the list. Please do post ALL answers to Roll queries back to the list as most of us are interested in all the lines. Thank you, Nancy Lohbrunner lohbrunner@prodigy.net

    1. [ROLL] my new email address
    2. William Henry Roll
    3. Dear Researchers, I have a new email address: <william.roll@gte.net>. Unfortunately, it will take a month or more to change the old email addresses on my Web sites and GenConnect boards again. I can't receive forwarded mail from the old addresses. Both of my former internet service provider recently faded away, the last without warning. I have not been able to receive email for a couple of weeks, while searching for another internet connection. Sadly, all the email from that time has been lost. There were most likely some good leads in the lost mail. GTE is an international telephone corporation, and will probably be more permanent. The internet connection from the remote desert town where I live has been tenuous at best. Thank you for your patience.

    3. Dear Researchers: There is some information about the Roll families from Switzerland, Germany, and France at my Web site at <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~windmill/html/europe.html>. The material is a translation of a French Web page. The town of Rolle, I think on Lake Geneva, is in Switzerland, very near Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France. I feel that the name of this town may be the source of many of the Roll surnames, possibly even my own. Please note my new email address: <william.roll@gte.net>. 3. Eric, Thank you. I was not aware of that information. I am quite new to researching the Rolle name. At least now I feel more confident in the spelling of the name as being Rolle rather then Roll for this ancestor. Being that I was informed that she was without a doubt of French Origin. Edenkoben, the town her family moved to and where I am told she was born, was very much in the Alsac-Lorraine region between France and Germany. Andrea (Schreiner) Heslin

    2. In a message dated 99-10-31 08:01:14 EST, you write: << Her maiden name was Julianne Christina Roll or Rolle we don't know the exact spelling. But are thinking is that the very name Roll or Rolle is French obviously due to her parents having been French. Andrea (Schreiner) Heslin acheslin@msn.com >> You may already know this but I'll send it along anyway: MICHEL ROLLE was a famous French mathematician who lived from 1652 to 1719 in and around Paris. An important theorem of his was posthumously named after him by others of his profession. Any mathematician will recognize Rolle's theorem by name (hopefully by content too). The name ROLLE is distinctly French. Hope this helps, Eric Roll

    3. Hi Just got you notice from the list on Roll. I have a question or two. Do you have any ideas as to the nationality origin of your Roll family? I ask this because I have an ancestor whom came to America from Nuremberg Germany in the 1870's. She was originally from the tiny town of Edenkoben (name no longer existing) Germany but was of French parents. Her maiden name was Julianne Christina Roll or Rolle we don't know the exact spelling. But are thinking is that the very name Roll or Rolle is French obviously due to her parents having been French. 2. Hi, I am not sure about the nationality of my Phebe Rall and possible father James or John Rall and their father John Rall, but they probably connect to Mangle Rall Roll Ral Raal who was from the Netherlands. It seems thats the way everything is pointing at this time. Georgie Mitchell

I got the general picture about the Ralls/Rolls, Mangel, and all, and some hints for my Phebe Rall b 1800 in Rockland Co, NY. It would seem maybe her father is either James or John Rall/ Roll who were both in Rockland Co, NY at about Phebe's birth time, and that maybe they are brothers and both sons of another earlier John Rall, but there is nothing defintite connecting Phebe to the family. Does anyone have any further specifics on my line?? Thanks once again. Georgie Mitchell

    2. LOHBRUNNER
    3. Hi Georgianna, Welcome to the Roll/Rall, all spellings surname list. My Rall family started out as Roll, but the change of spelling took place in Ohio. Do you have any of the names of the towns your Phebe Rall lived in? Several of us on the list descend from Jan Mangel who was born abt 1635, the earliest mention of him (that I have) was in 1661 when he acknowledged in court he owed his father-in-law. We believe he married in 1660 Albany,NY. He owned land in Schenectady. His children changed their name to the English ROLL. Most of them ended up around Staten Island, then some went to New Jersey, then further west. There is another on the list whose RALL family lived in western NY state, maybe she can help. It may take awhile as she had twin boys less than six months ago. Nancy Lohbrunner lohbrunner@prodigy.net

I would like , if you have it, some history of Grandads sons & daughters. I have never had any idea of going to USA but the rest of the family have been there at some time and have met the US side.
