Hi Naomi: This is not my line, but there are quite a few of us on the list that are interested in all Roll lines. Please post what you have on Lydia. Right now I can't think if anyone on the list is from this John Roll's line. If there is anything you would like one of us to post, please let us know. We do have most of the ancestor's of Johns. regards, Nancy Lohbrunner lohbrunner@prodigy.net
I am researching the Roll family of Northumberland and Norfolk. Peters Roll born 15 Dec 1814, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England - all information appreciated. Louise Everest
Hi Pamela: Your message that Elizabeth Roll Latourette married second a Mr. Funderburg/Funderburgh really through me for a while. I knew I had something about Elizabeth, but couldn't remember. I had not processed my notes. I have a lot of data on the LaTourette family as my grgrgrandmother was Mary Jane Latourette who married Isaac Brooks RALL, son of Moses ROLL. Below are 'parts' of a letter written by Paredes H. Latourrette. He mentions his grandfather James LaTourette (who I believe was married to Mary ROLL) Also mentions uncles, Robert and Henry, who were sons of James LaTourette and Mary ROLL. He wrote his father's name was John LaTourette and that he died in 1878 about 80 yrs old. He does not mention his mother's name but does say she "is now living with me". I believe his mother was Elizabeth Roll/Rall daughter of Aaron Roll. So Elizabeth was living with her son in 1884 in Galt,Calif. Her husband did not die until 1878, so this Elizabeth could not have married Mr. Funderburg bef 20 Aug 1871. Elizabeth was born in 1814 and was 57 yrs old in 1871. A John Funderburg died 20 Aug 1871 at age 35, his wife, Elizabeth died 2 May 18?? at age 25, per cemetery records. Both are buried in different cemeteries in Bethel Twp,Clark Co,OH. LDS FHL film 1036906, Notes of Verna Hill Jacobs. "Letter of P.H. Latourrette, Galt, Calif to P.P. LaTourette, Hamilton, Ohio 27 July 1884. "The following letter was loaned by Miss Josephine La Tourette, Middletown,Ohio, around 1925 to William M. LaTourette, Plainfield,N.J. from the files of her late father, Peter P. La Tourette. "Galt,California 27 July 1884 Mr. P.P.La Tourette, Esq. Dear .... My Grand Father's name was James La Tourette, born in Staten Island. He had a brother David who left home when a young man and was never heard from after leaving home. My mother who is now living with me has heard him (Gran Father sic) mention the name Peter LaTourette - but does not know the relationship claimed between them. My father's name was John LaTourrette. Came with his parents from New Jersey to Clark Co., Ohio when about 4 years of age, at which place they lived and died. My father died in 1878 being about 80 years old. .I would be pleased to have you write to my uncle Robert La Tourette, Medway,Clark Co., Ohio, and Henry La Tourette, Waverly, Indiana, who can give a better history of my ancestors. I was born in Clark Co. in 1846 hence am now 38 years of age. ..Hoping to hear from you again at an early day, I am Truly Yours, Signed P.H.Latourrette." I would appreciate your thoughts on this. My interest is Lydia. from the ROLL archives, an old message from Martha she said I have a marriage record for Lydia Roll to Jacob Timbrell in 1813, Butler Co., Ohio. Is this the Lydia, 3rd wife of John Roll who married (1) Rachel Van Winkle (2) Edith Wick (3) Lydia. I suggest YES and will work toward proving or disproving the supposition. All comments welcome. I suggest Lydias maiden name was GOBLE, their marriage in Ohio between 1797 and 1804, and I further suggest that John ROLLs son Matthias may have spent some time in western PA which is not yet reflected in the family sheets found in the archives. 9 Dec. 1794 Oaths of Allegience in Washington Co PA - Sworn before Ebn. GOBLE, of Morris Township Mathias ROLL Please correct me if these are not the Rolls and Gobles who moved to Butler Co OH. My guess is made on the suggestion that Gobles and Rolls are associated again in the decade: OH Butler Common Pleas Vol 1 pp62-63 Third Tuesday of May 1804 before Hon Francis Dunlavy Esq. John Roll and Lydia Roll his wife vs Henry Shafer (she lately Lydia Goble). In 1797 in the town of Hamilton Henry Shafer entered into a promisory note with Liddy Goble in the amount of fiftyfour dollars to be paid with interest within six months, she then being femme sole and unmarried. Henry has repeatedly refused to make payment and therefore John and Lydia claim for a suit of one hundred dollars. Henry Shafer was represented by Daniel Symmes but the court found for the plaintiffs and awarded eightynine dollars and fiftysix cents for damages and court costs. The connection I want to TIMBRELLs is weaker, but may track back from Butler Co OH western PA into NJ as I think Matthias Roll does: Jacob Timbrel. Born poss 1771 in Elizabeth, Union Co NJ. m Sarah Stebbens 1790 Moristown, Morris Co NJ 1791 PENNSYLVANIA ARCHIVES THIRD SERIES VOL. XXII Page 656 from Marilyn Ramsay Alleghany Co PA 1791 Return of taxes St. Clair Twp. Jacob Timbral Taxes 3 Hamilton County OH Probates 7 Nov 1797 Samuel Pounds deceased, Jacob Timbrel produced a proven account Is anyone on the ROLL list familiar with Stebbens? Pounds? Gobles? Timbrells? Did Lydia Goble Roll marry Jacob Timbrell Sr. or Jacob Timbrell Jr. in 1813? Naomi Emmich
Dear Roll List Members, I just came on something different. The following Web site uses MANGELS as a patronymic for MICHIEL. I don't think there is any connection with our Jan Mangels, but I thought I would send this on to the group nevertheless. I wonder of this patronymic is unique, or if the useage appears elsewhere. http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/s/t/y/Steven-P-Stymiest/BOOK-0001/0006- 0003.html 10.
