Hi Audrey, I have a little bit on this. WINFIELD SCOTT ROLL b. 06/03/1852 Married: Sarah C. Alexander b. 1853 M. 01/29/1874 I only have 1 child listed for them. - Bertha Roll b. 12/02/1874 I don't have any updated information on this family. Winfield Scott Roll was the 5th child of Silas Roll and 2nd wife, Mary Martha Moore. Silas Roll was the 12th child of Matthias & Mary (Rutan) Roll. Matthias was the one who moved to Indiana and settled the town of Roll, Indiana in 1849. Matthias Roll was the 3rd child of John & Rachel (Van Winkle) Roll. John was the 1st child of John & Elizabeth (Sickles) Roll. (most of you have Elizabeth Strikhauser). You know after all these years of research, I just noticed that several of Matthias & Mary (Rutan) Roll's children stayed in Butler Co., Ohio. I just took it for granted that when he settled the town of Roll, Indiana that all his family was there also. It's in my records so, why I thought this, I have no idea. I wish I had a scanner so I wouldn't have to type all this again. Although if I had my records into this fancy computer, I wouldn't have to anyway. Then I would have to learn to send Gedcom files. Best wishes, Martha
David I suggest you you take a look at the Miami Valley Genealogical Index, located at http://pcdl.lib.oh.us/miami/miami.htm it is an index of nearly 500,000 people who lived in southwest Ohio, mostly before 1900. Be aware that Roll and Rall are frequently mixed up by the civil servants who recorded the information. Good hunting Ed Locker
Dave, I notice you provide a link to the Norris Families in America Web page. I was there the other day, and noticed a link to my Roll Family Genealogy Windmill on the pages. The pages are not easy to navigate and search. Various search engines can be limited to a specific site, but I've never used that feature. For a while I've been aware that the Norris family was related to the Roll family, but I can't figure out the link. What is it? -Bill =============================================================== William Henry Roll ~ Blythe, California ~ [email protected] ROLL Family Genealogy on the WWW: http://members.aol.com/whroll Researching the genealogy of the ROLL-MANGEL-WOGGELUM families "A thousand candles have burned themselves out; yet I read on." ===============================================================

The downtime for ROOTSWEB has been cancelled for today, but will take place on FRIDAY. Nancy [email protected]
RootsWeb lists will be down this afternoon from 1:30-6:30 PST while they up-grade. They assure us, no mail will be lost. Nancy
Nancy Remembering that I work for Xerox and have unlimited access to copying machines, please contact me (I lost your address when we went to the rootsweb). Ed
Nancy, It's exciting that you have found the mysterious Marguerite S Roll book. You can make "fair use" of the material. However, I would caution you about scanning or photocopying large potions of it for distribution. Even if it is not published, it is still a copyrighted book---even if the author is dead. It sounds like John Roll has the same concerns about copyright, and I don't blame him! As a writer/editor, I'm concerned about copyright laws too. It took me a while to publish my web pages because I was concerned about people "stealing" my work. That said, I still like to share information and help others with their genealogy---as does everyone else on this mailing list. It would be nice to see Marguerite's book in a library (such as the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake) with a new index. What a project! It would be a fitting tribute to the author and help so many researchers. I wonder what John Roll would think of that? ---Robin in NH
I had to chuckle when I read your e-mail about GEDCOM's as it reminded me that I still have not loaded my genealogy software on my new computer. We have had it three weeks or more and I have to use the other computer for my genealogy. That's not too bad, but I bought new genealogy software six months ago and it is still in the box! When we bought a 'modern' computer in 1995, I had floppies from our computer of over 10 years and the new computer only took the 3.5 disks. I took the floppies with data on them to KINKOS and copied them to the 3.5 and everything came out ok. It was quite inexpensive and the people there were very kind in helping a computer challenged old lady. Try a GEDCOM sometime it is really not so difficult. Good luck, Nancy
Hi Kathleen, I have the information that you want, except that I have to know if you have a program that accepts GEDCOM files or if you have Family Tree maker and if you do, I can send the information direct through E-Mail. If you don't have Family Tree Maker, I have to send the files GEDCOM . Then, I need to know what it is you want, do you want the descendants of Warren Larue Roll or do you want the entire thing of the ancestors and the descendants of Warren Larue Roll? I hope you only want the descendants and that will only be a few pages. I haven't done GEDCOM files before and I am so new at this fancy computer, I hope that it will go through alright. I may chicken out and tell you to go to Betty (Roll) Holt at [email protected] she sent the records to me again and I have a fear of the unknown. She has a list of the Roll's you are looking for and it would be easier that trying to do it myself. How's that for putting things off folks? I know I have to do it someday but right now, I can pass the buck. Kathleen, if you need me to try, I will. I just have to read the book. I would like to exchange information on this Roll family, the children and grandchildren: Warren Larue Roll married to Malissa Askren. Warren Larue Roll was born about 1824, maybe in Kentucky. He married Malissa Askren 9 Feb 1843 in Harrison Co., Indiana. Malissa Askren is a member of a Springer family on whom I am preparing a book. Malissa was born 20 Jun 1823 in Harrison Co., Indiana, the daughter of David Askren and Nancy Davis. Both of these spouses are buried in Doniphan Co., Kansas. Warren Roll died 2 Mar 1896 and Malissa Askren Roll died 10 Dec 1898. They had the following children: David Roll b. 24 Jan 1844 Julia Ann b. 21 Mar 1846 John Jacob b. 20 Sep 1847 Isaac P. b. 10 May 1849 Nancy Elizabeth b. 13 Dec 1850 died young Mary Cristina b. 1 Dec 1853 George Gaylor b. 17 Apr 1855 died at age 18 Sarah Abigail b.28 Apr 1857 born when the family had moved west to Monroe Co., Iowa William Henry b. 24 Jan 1859 Hannah Roll b. 18 Oct 1860 Warren Larue b. 29 Dec 1862 and last child was Amanda Melissa Roll b. 20 June 1865. I do have a few death dates for some of the above children, and do have spouses in most cases. Would like to fill in some of the remaining blanks and have further details on the next generation(s).
I goofed. Sorry. Last week, before I ran across this group researching Roll Genealogy, I seached the web for genealogy. (It's about the only thing that I do search for.) I ran across 5 books by Marguerite Roll. I believe it was an S. for an initial. Not sure. I have been on the internet all day trying to find this again and have failed. I didn't write it down because she had been part of our group for almost as long as we have all been researching Roll History. We all have about the same thing. As far as I knew, no one had published. I didn't know Marguerite Roll had passed away and I am truly sorry. I received a card from her and I believe it was last Christmas. She was the wife of Lyle Charles Roll and he was Chairman of the Board of Kellogg Corporation. They had a summer home in Northern Michigan and lived at Phoenix, Arizona. Her husband passed away before we started writing to her. I haven't found what I was looking for today but it might not have been her and maybe another Marguerite Roll. I do wish I had wrote down the information. I will keep trying when I have the time. This thing is new to me and when I get someplace, I don't remember how I got there or how to get back to it. We all talked about publishing at one time and several checked on it but the publishers we ran into only wanted to do 300 pages in each book and at the time, our indexes were larger than that. All of us wanted one full book with indexes to that family, which would end up as 3 books altogether. I am certain that if anyone published, they would let the rest of us know about it. We also worked with, Charlotte Giltner, a Certified Genealogist in Detroit, Michigan. Charlotte & Marguerite did a lot of work on the very early Roll line and Marguerite intended doing research Holland but I don't know if she was successful. Evelyn, Lynn, Janis & I mainly worked on updating information. Of course, each of us had the same records and we added it all together. The only guestion was about the Elizabeth who married John Roll. Was her name Elizabeth Sickles or Elizabeth ( I believe, Stickland) was the name Marguerite came up with. The information she sent was not concrete enough to change our records and as I said before, I did not change anything until everyone agreed. The other researchers agreed not to change it. We all did believe that the name was likely van Sickles because someone came up with an Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham van Sickles. Sorry for the goof. I'll try to do better. Best Wishes, Martha

Bill: Last May you posted the information from the Library of Congress about the Roll book by Richard Timbrook Wilson, with additions by Richard John Franz 3rd, compiled by Marguerite S. Roll, which included her address. I wrote to Harry Wahl and asked if he had written to her lately and he had not, so I wrote a letter to the address you posted. Shortly thereafter you posted that she had passed away and left a million dollars to the Library of Congress. Within less than a week, I received a letter from the trustee of the Marguerite S. Roll Trust, he sent me the address of the nephew of Mrs. Rolls husband, Lyle C. Roll also deceased. I wrote to the nephew, (would you believe) John Roll inquiring if the book could be purchased. At first, John said Marguerite compiled the book as a gift for her husband and his family (they did not have any children, she was his second wife) and was a very private person. He was very skeptical about me and what I would do with her book if I had a copy. He is not "into" genealogy. After corresponding for a long period, he sent a copy of the book, but never answered my question of whether I could share it with other researchers. Finally, he said ok as long as Marguerite was given credit for her work and not used for commercial or financial gain. John and his wife have been preparing for a move, plus they had to see their youngest child settled at college, and that is why this whole process has taken so long. He is on line and after a certain date I will contact him to invite him to join the list. I did not want to say anything before in case nothing panned out. The book is 514 pages, typed on normal size paper, but printed on both sides. I checked with a copy service close to where I live and they charge $.11 for two sided copies. It is soft bound with two holes in the paper. John said the book was a gift, but I sent him a check for $30.00 before I found out double sided copies were so expensive. There is NO index. He said Marguerite sent him the 514 unbound pages in 1992. I was hoping we would get a scanner so I could start scanning some of it, but now it looks like I will get the scanner as a Christmas present. Until then, I will be happy to do look-ups for anyone, but not for a couple of weeks as I have to type some data for the Kansas GenWeb site. John has not said anything about his uncle, but the Trustee wrote that Lyle Roll was for many decades with the Kellogg Company and retired as Chairman of the Board and CEO. From the SS death index, I found a Lyle Roll who was born 13 Sep 1907 MI and died Sep 1984 in AZ. Lyle Charles Roll was m1 to Martha Angela Barrett who died in 1970 and m2 to Marguerite Anne Swallen. Van Laer, Albany, 1916. Genealogical Society of Utah, 974.742, N2v, Vol. 2. Page 402. Contract of sale between Claes Jansen van Bockhoven and Jan Mangelsen of land at Niskayuna On this 14th day of January 1672/3 appeared before me, Adriaen van Ilpendam, notary public residing in N: Albany, and before the underwritten witnesses, Claes Jansz van Boeckhooven (1The same as Bockhoven.) of the first part and Jan Mangelsz (2His descendants used the surname Roll) of the second part, who acknowledge that in love and freindship they have agreed in manner following, to wit: Claes Jansz van Boeckhooven acknowledges that he has sold and Jan Mangelsz that he has bought a certain parcel of land situated at Canastagioene, comprising three morgens, extending from the kill of Ryck Claesz's (3Ryck Claessen van Vranken.) land to the land which the seller keeps for himself, to wit, to a hickory tree whose top is bent down, as he has been pointed out to the buyer. The aforesaid distance is the breadth of the parcel and in length it extends backwards so as to contain the said three morgens, which said parcel is a portion of the land that the seller bought of Harmen Vedder and Barent Reyndersz (4See con ract of May 17, 1672, in this volume.), and the seller delivers said land to the buyer now free and unincumbered (saving the lord's right); for which the buyer promises to pay every year three skipples of good winter wheat, excepting the two first years, which the buyer or his heirs must pay every year so long as the seller or his wife named VOLCKIE JANS live, and after the death of the seller and his wife, then the buyer or his heirs shall own it: in addition to this, the buyer promises to make the fence and maintain it constantly in good repair, between said land and the seller's land. The aforesaid contracting parties mutually promise to execute and perform what is hereinbefore written under pledge of their persons and estates, nothing excepted, subject to all courts and judges. In confirmation of which they have subscribed this with their own hands without craft or guile, dated as above. This is the mark X of Claes Jansz van Boeckhooven, made with his own hand. Jan Mangelsz As witnesses: This is the mark X of Barent Pietersz, made by himself Mees Pietersz Hoogeboom Quod attestor Adriaen Van Ilpendam, Not. Pub. Claes Jansz van Boeckhooven is the seller Jan Mangelsz is the buyer "seller or his wife named Volckie Jans" If I understand the Dutch naming system of this period, the female was known by her father's first name even after she was married. So Volckie would be the daughter of Jan. If she was the daughter of Pieter Adriaensen Van Woggelum, why wasn't she known as Volckie/Volkie Pieterse? If she was married to Jan Mangelse, why wasn't a daughter named after her? There was a daughter name Tryntje Janse Roll who married Pieter Van Neste Jr. <Prodigy Distribution List> CC: MQBE34A
